Do cats ever have other cats as friends?

Of course! We had this cat grace. We think her previous owner was abusive and we’re pretty sure the owner had tried to drown the cat to get rid of her.

We had this other cat, Mozart, who was a fat little guy. Shy and fat, but with a nice heart.

Once we introduced them to eachother and had a month or two to acclimate, those two cats were joined at the hip. One never went anywhere without the other. You’d find them wandering the woods side-by-side, sleeping together rubbing up against eachother.

In fact, we even have this one cat, Blixa who meaows and cries for attention from our Australian Shepherd. So it can go cross-species, too.

Of the 39 species of cats, 36 are solitary animals which do not form family and social bonds. The three exceptions are lions, cheetahs, and the cherished domestic cat.

Oh sure. I just walked in the door and my two male cats met me in the drive way to say hello. They greeted each other, and a little ways away was their friend, a neighbour cat. Cats always come to visit mine, and they all hang out in the back yard like teenagers. I’ve had four cats in my yard at times, and only two are mine.

Anecdote: my boy cat got locked in the closet in another room and I couldn’t hear him yelling. His sister came and got me and insisted I go with her to rescue him. Took me a while to catch on. (“Timmy’s in the well?”)

Another anecdote: I didn’t really want a cat but one adopted me so I figure hey, at least she has enough to eat and wasn’t emaciated like she was when she was dependent on handouts from the neighbors.

But she was immensely bored because I didn’t want to play with her, partly because she played too rough for my tastes. So when I went out to work every day, I offered her the choice to stay in or out for the day, where she would have an opportunity to be less bored that day. (She was very social and always meowed at anyone who passed by.)

So this one time, [there was a bat]* in my condo. I walked up to my cat and made a motion like “follow me”. Despite the stereotype, she did follow me and was interested in the bat flying around the room – for about 10 seconds. I was hoping that she would scare the bat away so it wouldn’t want to come back, but no dice I guess.

*redacted from “I had a bat in my condo”, which I understand refers to masturbation in certain dialects.

I have two cats. They are totally best friends. They play and groom each other (well, one grooms the other). They sleep curled up with each other. And they fight too. Just like human friends. When I hang out with them I feel like a third wheel.

I adopted them on separate occasions, about five years apart.

I wish my cats were friends. We currently house three and they all hate each other. They all joined the family at different times, but their hate was instant and continuous. Many years ago we adopted two unrelated kittens at the same time, and those guys hated each other also.

My cat is about 16 years old now and always seems to have 1 friend or another. Her first friend was the labrador retriever who lived next door. When we moved she had a neighbor cat as a friend, These past few years she has befriended a raccoon that lives somewhere on my property. I see them sitting on the fence together and eating together.

Two of my free range cats are brothers two years apart. They are big pals.
