Do cats like to go for rides in cars the way some dogs do?

Just curious. Do cats ever like to go for car rides the way some dogs do?

Mine sure doesn’t. He meows and meows and sheds like mad!

In all my years as a cat owner or various cats, not one of them enjoyed a car ride.

I’ve never known a cat to like riding in a car. Of course, pretty much the only placer they ever go is to the vet, so maybe the destination bothers them more than the ride.

I knew a cat who lived on a ship and seemed okay with it.

I had a cat that LOVED riding in the car. If I opened the car door then went back and opened the front door of the house he would race out and jump in. The plus side was I never had to worry about a cage for him in the car. Our current cat hates car rides and gets really freaked out. It really just seems to vary.

My brother used to have a big, fat yellow cat named Rowdy who loved to go for rides in his car, a beautiful 1960 Chevy Impala. The car had enough room between the massive dash and that gigantic domed windshield for a Mazda to fit, and the cat loved sitting up there and watching the world go by.

There is at least one cat who likes riding on a bus:-

I remember someone saying that for dogs, it’s all about the chance to be exposed to all the smells going by with unnatural speed and intensity. By sticking her head out the window, my dog is getting the olfactory equivalent of the Matrix on an Imax screen. But cats are primarily visual, aren’t they?

Cats get a lot of information by hearing and smelling, as well as by just looking. Those pointy ears gather lots of sound, and if a cat hears something, it Must Be Investigated. Sounds would come too quickly on a car ride for a cat to feel comfortable in determining just what made which sound.

So it would be like taking your grandmother to see the Matrix on an Imax screen. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve never had a cat that enjoyed riding in the car. Always with the constant yowling and fur shedding everywhere. I’ve seen cats riding in the back dash of a car, but that’s in other cars, not mine.

One of ours likes riding in the car. Put him on a leash and keep him in the back seat. Loves to look out the window changing sides from time to time.

My family’s cats were absolutely terrified of being in the car. When they were taken on trips (not necessarily to the vet), they would let out this deathly yowl that I never heard any other time. “Accidents” were frequent.

Our cats didn’t like water, either, in the bathtub (curious, but afraid) or the lake. But I personally knew a cat who willingly jumped on his owner’s sailboat and enjoyed the ride, and my mother had a cat that would voluntarily swim out to their canoe instead of being left on shore.

And I once had a neighbor with a giant RV and their cat would curl up on a rug on the dash during trips, seemingly unconcerned about the passing scenery.

I can’t explain the difference in behaviors, but it sure can be drastic. Maybe it’s something in their genes.

Generally, no, but some do. In elementary school, my mother would sometimes bring the cat along in the car to pick me up, and he seemed perfectly happy to be coming along. Not happy to see us, mind you, because he was a misanthropic son of a bitch, but he enjoyed the car ride itself.

Something like YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWOOOOOWWWWW? 'cause that’s how everyone one of mine has ever sounded like in a car. They’re obviously not fans.

Something like that. But maybe with a few more Os. And they often start panting, which for a cat is unusual. My interpretation is one of extreme panic.

Ours has come to tolerate the RV. She just burrows in the bed linens and waits for the day to end. Whenever we stop, she comes out and socializes, but otherwise remains asleep and oblivious.

None of the hoards of cats we had over the years ever liked riding. They all caterwauled whenever forced to ride, either in a carrier or loose in the car.

Even when we got a new kitten that had never even been in a car, they howled all the way home.

It would be cool to have a cat that liked riding, but we’ve given up. Both our current guys go nuts if they even see the carrier. Have to keep it just inside the door to the garage, pick them up, quickly open the door and shove them in quickly. Usually works.

I’ll agree with that. I also never took my cat anywhere but the vet, the association was blatantly obvious to the cat.

The dog love it however. He kept trying to work the clutch for me

Did they drop their fur too? My cat hated cars and would drop her fur. By the time the ride was over, I was shocked she wasn’t bald, for the amount of fur she shed

Yep, it does make the fur fly.
