I always smoked menthol, and don’t mind fresh menthol smoke. But regular cigarette smoke, or any kind of stale cig smoke, is horrible. I used to smoke inside, and for a year of my life spent pretty much weeks at a time in a smoke cloud (smoked at work, all my friends and room mate smoked), and didn’t mind the smell at all; now I hate even going into the house of anyone I know who smokes indoors.
It took me a year or two after smoking to feel like I regained a normal sense of smell.
The way many heavy smokers smell also makes me vomitous. Something about the way it clings to your clothes and hair and mingles with natural body odors is just ungodly gross.
Its been over two years and they still smell good to me.
It’s been ten years and they still smell good to me.
I agree with several others. The smell of fresh smoke is OK the smell of stale smoke on people or in places is repulsive. Mind you when I was a smoker they had smoking carriages on intercity trains in Australia and, although I may have gone in to one to smoke on a long trip, I couldn’t sit in one because of the smell.
I smoked at least a pack a day for almost 17 years. Quit almost 20 years ago. Nothing ever changed with my sense of smell or taste. I prefer not to smell like cigarettes, but I can be around them, even in a smoky bar – although those are becoming fewer even over here, thank goodness – and not be bothered.
I quit smoking back in March 2010. I always liked the smell of cigarette smoke better before I started, and I find it smells better now that I’ve quit. Smokers, I now notice strongly, stink.
Nah, both my boyfriend and my friend quit the old fashioned way - they just stopped smoking.
I’m kinda surprised by all the replies, I felt almost certain that most people would find the smell repulsive after quitting (like my friend did). I guess it just made sense to me.
