Do electric furnaces wear out?

I understand, I think, that there’s really no way to increase the efficiency of an electric furnace, inasmuch as there’s really no energy lost when it’s on. All the energy goes to the heating element. But I’m wondering if electric furnaces weaken or wear out after a while. Maybe the heating element cracks or doesn’t heat up as much as it did when it was new? Maybe it’s obvious that I don’t think our furnace is heating our apartment very well. And I’m wondering why.

The heating elements can break/split and become useless. The fan(s) can quit. The air filters can be clogged. The control can die/go wonky. Lots of ways for an electric furnace to go south.
