Do folks in the UK eat Beef?

Several polls in the UK have come up with Chicken Tikka Masala as the nations favourite dish. Indian food is very big over here, Chinese, Italian, Mexican & Thai also.

I probably cook more Indian, Italian and Mexican food than anything else.

Can’t beat bangers and mash though, that’s gotta be the ultimate !

When I need a Tex-Mex fix I go to The Texas Embassy in London. Their main website is here, but was down at the time of posting.

Seconded. And shut up about bloody Marmite. There should be a Godwin’s Law about people mentioning Marmite in any thread about the UK.

(Not that I’m particularly getting at you, Blueapple, please don’t take it personally; it’s just that it gets mentioned so often and then we have to go through the whole bleugh v. yum yum spiel again.)

Can’t we have some kind of sticky FAQ about British food? One about UK/Britain/United Kingdom might be a good idea, too.

In Scotland, which is a small fishing village in Wales, London (which is in Ireland near New Zealand), English people sit in mud huts and eat vegemite and boiled beef, washed down with warm kidney beer, while saying “pip pip” “tally ho” and “bonjour” to each other, as they bow in obeisance to their socialist king.

[The above was compiled from statements made to me over the years by citizens of a cough certain country over the other side of the Atlantic, that shall remain nameless…]

I had a very passable Cajun chicken jambalaya thing at the YGI Friday’s near … Watford, I think. It’s also on the menu at the TGI Friday’s in the Opera Quarter in Paris too. So it’s likely at the London one.

The Indian food in the UK is the best. I have trouble finding good southern Indian restaurants; most seem to be northern style. Vindaloo, tindaloo, madras-style…there’s a place in Birmingham that serves nan bread is meter-diameter sheets, that is simply wicked!

Some Brits do boil their beef for stews. I’ve not seen anyone boil anything else.

Black pudding isn’t as bad as you think. Just pretend you’re a Klingon, and you can get into the spirit of it.

Yorkshire puddings are sadly, sadly overrated.

Marmite is eaten for conversation and shock value only - like some people in the US eat skunks.

1.1) its Black Pudding not Blood Pudding

1.2) You can only go “urgh!” if you’ve tried it and not liked it. Not just because you are squemish at the name.

  1. A country that eats Gator Meat should think twice before cussing Steak and Kidney Pies

Gator meat is pretty good. It takes just like chicken! Actually, its kind of like pork with a wang to it!

I’ve never heard of anyone eating skunk, but when I lived in Arkansas racoons and sweet potatoes were a hot commodity in the backwoods. I understand that a raccoon tastes like really greasy pork. Supposedly its one of those dishes that just coat your mouth with fat. Never cared to try it, though.

I’m not knocking UK food by any means. I’m just trying to get some insite from you guys before I go over. Hopefully, if I pick up a little info about the UK before I go over, it want be such a culture shock to me.

I’ve enjoyed visiting with you folks.

What brought up this post in the first place was a call from the local blood bank. I’m a blood donor and after I told them that I was going to the UK they weren’t interested in me anymore. They were afraid that I may have BSE or whats the human form…crutzfields jacobs disease? I can’t remember exactly. Anyway, it made me wonder if beef was still popular in the UK. I hear that its really cheap right now.

I had roast beef on Sunday

Me too.
