I have never altered my driving habits to use the HOV lane, but take advantage of it when I can. This seems to defeat the purpose at least for me, it just is a convenience when I happen to be able to use them.

Assuming you do: Yes, I’ve taken advantage when I could. The Northern Virginia area has evolved something called the “slug line” - people show up at a handful of spots along I-95/395, and other people drive by and pick them up. I’ve been both a driver and a passenger.
