I am not entirely impressed with the company I work for, or my current job situation. The job’s alright, but not my ideal career by a long shot. Actually I’m already starting to not like my job, but it does pay the bills I guess.
I am still hoping to continue my job search while working this job. I hope to send off a new bunch of resumes this week.
Do I update my resume immediatly to reflect my new job? List my new employer as August 2003 - present? Will it look weird for an employer to receive a resume listing a job just started that month?
Alright, I probably won’t list this job right away. I have heard that you should stay at a job for 6 months, but I’d also really like to move into a better position sooner, if there’s one out there. Any advice on how long I should wait to start listing it?
Probably depends somewhat on your pay. Rule of thumb: for every $10,000 you want to make, expect to spend one month at a job search. So if you want to make $50,000 dollars at your next job, it probably wouldn’t look too odd if you went at least a few more months without it on your résumé.
I’d list it - but I always keep my resume up to date in case someone wants it for a bio or something.
My advice to you is to make a serious effort to make the best of your current job, and make sure to do a lot of networking. A lot. Gobs.
Additionally, if you have the sort of position where it would make sense for you to speak or present at conferences, then get yourself on the podium. You’ll either find another job or find a better place for yourself in your current job.
