Tristan: Well (if you mean the kilt), I haven’t lived in rural PA, but I pretty much live in rural IA, and I get by with it.
You might be surprised. The prejudice isn’t nearly what I anticipated. People are often more civilized than we expect. That’s one of the things that I’ve learned by wearing these.
It sounds ridiculous and totally hyperbolic to construe them as instruments or indicators of social engineering, but they do seem to have that effect at times. They confront social biases, they address prejudices, and they often surprise by how acceptable they turn out to be (when you would anticipate mass antipathy), and rarely by how antagonistic they turn out to be (when the acceptance has been discovered to be commonplace).
It’s been a remarkable experience to adopt them as standard clothing. It tells you a lot about people that you didn’t know. That’s one of the things that I like about them.
That, and how comfortable they are (No Wedgies!), as well as the female reaction.
I should note that it was never my intention to hijack the OP into a “Dijon in a Kilt” lovefest, and I’m sorry if that seems to have happened. My only point in mentioning them was that the question: “Where can I find some comfortable shorts?” was limiting success. My thought was that getting beyond shorts might be the answer (since they certainly have been for me). These are an alternative (and in my opinion, a vast improvement). Something to be considered, is all.
Everything else is…just crazy talk.
