Do I need my social security card to get a passport?

Hey there,

My sister just invited me to go to London with her. I’ve never been out of the country and need a passport. I’ve lost my social security card recently and haven’t gone to the office to get a new one. (Yikes - I know, I know, I’ll do it!) Question: Will they let me get a passport without it??

Tibs.

Dunno. Look and see.

Duck Duck Goose, you rock my passport world.

Want to come along?

Short answer: no. Your US social security card is not a legal form of identification, so the number alone will suffice. You will, of course, need some other form of ID.

Of course, when you get to London, it’s best to take along any form of ID you have, legal or not. Trust me on what the UK Immigration Service is like

Considering that I got a passport about six years ago, but my SS card has been on the bottom of a lake in West Texas for about 20 years, I’d have to say “no.”
