Do I need Netflex Blu-Ray?

I have a Dell monitor with 1920 by 1080 resolution. Do I need Blu-Ray?
I stream from Netflix and also use discs from them. Is it worth the extra few bucks a month?

Sorry title should read* Netflix*

Fish and bicycles.

Do you have a Blu-Ray player? If not, don’t waste your money. If you have a Blu-Ray player, run a test by renting from RedBox. It’s cheaper than Netflix. If it all works for you and the image is clearer/sharper, go for it.

Then save even more money by dropping Netflix and just use RedBox.

My mom calls it “Netflux” sometimes.

THis one might do better in Cafe Society. Moved from GQ.

For DVDs, I know that Redbox’s selection is pitiful compared to that of Netflix. Are you saying this is not the case for Blu-rays? I mean, with Redbox DVDs, I could, if I wanted to, watch the entire selection in a month.

If you are unhappy with the image quality on DVDs then Blu-Ray will give you a sharper more detailed picture, assuming you have a Blu-Ray player. If you think the picture on DVDs is fine then Blu-Ray won’t be worth it.

Computer monitors are too small to be able to tell the difference in quality between DVD and Bluray. I believe you need at least a 50" screen to be able to discern a difference.

Not really true. Size is only a partial factor of quality, in fact “bigger is better” isn’t usually the case. Assuming that the proper screen size has been chosen the quality and perceived size of a computer monitor while sitting a foot away should be similar to that of a larger TV while sitting across the room.

This page has a good reference to determine viewing distance and discernible resolutions. Folks tends to sit a lot closer to their PC monitor then their TV, but check the chart to make sure.

If you don’t already have a Blu-Ray player, you have some more options since this is a computer monitor. Instead of hooking up a stand-alone Blu-Ray player to it, consider installing a Blu-Ray player in your computer. This one is only $60 and is also a Blu-Ray BURNER! These monsters pack 25GB onto a single-layer disc, and those are now under $1 each. Besides the obvious video uses, if you’re also looking for data backup for your computer, Blu-Ray is one of the cheapest ways to go!
