Do I need to attach 1098 and 1099 forms to my 1040?

I only get copies that are lebeled “Copy B - For Payer,” so maybe not. I’ve always just copied and sent them, but for whatever reason one of 'em just won’t get to me (I’ve asked for duplicates, but like the first one, they never arrive, and all that happens when I call is they say they’ll send me another one, and I never get that one either, and blah blah blah. I do have the actual numbers from off the phone, though). I would like to just get my taxes sent in because I have the forms done and I’ve just been waiting on one stupid piece of paper. Please let me know IF and only IF you are a CPA or tax official or something. WAGs are not helpful to me.

I am not a CPA or tax official. But if I cannot find the answer in the manual, I go to the IRS web site and search there.

BTW, you don’t need to send in those documents.

No, you don’t need to send them in (unless it’s a 1099-R), and in the tax instructions it tells you so. Look on page 57 of the 1040 Instructions, “Assembling the Return.”

I had seen that, but it’s not very clear about what you don’t have to attach supporting the schedules. It says “do attach W-2 and etc.”, not “do not attach the following” and a list of items including 1098 forms.

Thanks to both of you. I guess I’ll just send this stuff off and wait for the auditor. I noticed an error anyway and had to redo the whole mess, but now I’m good to go.

In the past, I had income that should have been reported on the 1099, but never got the form. I just reported it as income and sent in my return. No problem.

The IRS has no problem if you claim more income than they know about. They go under the assumption that you are probably telling the truth. However, if they know about income and you don’t claim it – watch out.

Mine is actually a 1098, and a sizeable deduction. They should know about it, though, since the mortgage copy should have sent them a copy… course, they also should have sent one to ME. I’ll send off the forms but still procure a copy my own records, and report it to the IRS if I never get it (they tell you to do that on the website).
