I decided around the beginning of this school year that I wasn’t going to cut my hair, but was going to let it grow out. My last haircut was toward the end of last June, so it’s been about seven months now. The thing is, my hair is curly - actually, quite curly. It’s not ridiculously tight, but it is quite thick and doesn’t grow that fast. The result of this is that it is a nice poofball at the moment, probably about 3 inches long if it were straightened out.
Anyway, I like my hair as it is now, but I actually want it to get longer, so it actually comes down some. I’m thinking around shoulder length or a little shorter would be nice. It’s going to take a good long while for it to get that long, of course - on me, that’s a LOT of hair. I was recently informed by an aquaintance (not a close friend, but nice friendly person in general) that I needed to “train” it down to do what I wanted or it would just keep growing out and out, rather than down. Basically, she said that parting it down the middle and wearing a hat over it would be a start. I’m a little skeptical, but she did work for a year in a hair salon.
So, what’s the Straight Dope? Will my curly hair eventually fall under its own weight, or do I really need to train it down, as was suggested? I’ll be very excited when my hair finally gets long, ha, but does this require effort on my part? Hmmm, and any idea on how long it’ll take curly hair to get long?
By the way, I’m a guy. Who is going to have long hair. Whaddya think?
