Do I really need Apache running on my XP boxes?

On two of my XP Pro SP3 boxes, Apache.exe is always running as a task and as a service (under the title “MRU Web Service”). There are at least two copies running all the time. I’m nearly certain that these are associated with my Marvell RAID adapters on both boxes (“MRU” is an acronym for “Marvell RAID Utility”). But I do not want to use Apache as a web server or even have them running at all because they consume a fair amount of RAM (26+ MB combined) and, of course, some CPU resources as well.

Question: Do I really need these things? The MRU provides a web interface to learn the status of the RAID arrays and for creating/destroying RAID arrays, but every single thing it reports is wrong! It says there are no RAID arrays and no hard drives at all, among a few other grossly incorrect “facts”. But disabling the Apache service and aborting the Apache tasks doesn’t work for long because Windows starts them up again immediately. Also, I created and modified the RAID arrays in the Marvell BIOS at start-up, so I don’t even need MRU at all.

I’m not familiar with the Marvell utility, but I doubt very much that you need Apache running for it, especially if you’ve had no use for it so far, and everything else is working to your satisfaction. It seems slightly odd that they would install a web server and start it up automatically at boot-up just for the RAID. It’s kind of a big application to be running on a computer if you don’t need it. Also, if the web interface is reporting incorrect info, from what you describe, there’s a good chance that the RAID is being administered via the BIOS rather than by application on the XP OS.

Apologies if you’ve already tried this, but:

[ol]
[li]From the start menu, click ‘run’, and then type ‘services.msc’ [/li][li]Find the offending process and right-click on it.[/li]li Stop the process.[/li][li]Select ‘Properties’ and then there should be a drop down selector box labeled ‘Startup type’. Choose ‘manual’ or ‘disabled’.[/li][/ol]

This should stop the process from starting up automatically at start up the next time you restart.

Thanks, born too late! I had indeed previously tried that, but without success. So this time, I not only stopped and disabled the services I mentioned in my OP, I used the Revo Uninstaller with it’s maximum settings to uninstall the MRU app. Bingo! Dead Injuns everywhere (:D), not an Apache in sight. Thanks for setting me on the right path…
