do "jive" speakers have difficulty understanding "plain" English?

Quite so! Even something as simple as “Oh Machine Elf! I speak Jive” would have sufficed.

Many of such persons are not Americans. Their media influences have not been Brian Williams and Katie Couric. That may make a difference.

While they may not be watching NBC news, they are absolutely consuming American movies and TV shows unless they really go out of their way not to.

Aside from local interest talk shows and the local news, every single TV show or film shown on local broadcast in Trinidad is of foreign and mostly American origin.
And most people have cable or satt, which is the east coast USA feed.

I can’t speak AAVE, but I don’t understand why it would be hard to understand. It’s only the accent that might be difficult, I’d think, as it makes perfect sense in print.
