Quite so! Even something as simple as “Oh Machine Elf! I speak Jive” would have sufficed.

While they may not be watching NBC news, they are absolutely consuming American movies and TV shows unless they really go out of their way not to.

Aside from local interest talk shows and the local news, every single TV show or film shown on local broadcast in Trinidad is of foreign and mostly American origin.
And most people have cable or satt, which is the east coast USA feed.

I can’t speak AAVE, but I don’t understand why it would be hard to understand. It’s only the accent that might be difficult, I’d think, as it makes perfect sense in print.

I first read this as “I can speak AAVE” and had a good laugh.
