I apologize, but this sort of question is generally frowned upon on these forums. File sharing services are of very dubious legality, and the SDMB truly does not want any lawsuits.
I wasn’t aware that these questions were inappropriate. I would understand if a moderator wants to close the thread.
However, I find it hard to believe that such a discussion could land SDMB in any trouble. Downloading and installing and using Kazaa is not illegal in-and-of-itself. That is like saying I can’t post a thread about how to operate a VCR because a VCR can be used to pirate movies.
The moderators have already cleared this issue up. Over and over and over and over and over and over. Do a search for “file sharing” and bask in any of the upteen jillion threads that pop up.
It’s not so much a question of whether we would get in trouble for allowing such threads but of our taking intellectual property rights seriously. It’s bad karma. Don’t rip off lest ye be ripped off, and all that.
Thanks for the advice Smeghead. I checked out a few threads and I think I now have a pretty good idea how this topic is dealt with on SDMB.
So, I won’t get an answer to my question here. That’s okay, I can find the answer elsewhere.
For what it’s worth, I would like to state that I am a bit confused as to the stance of the moderators on this one. I’m just perplexed that they shy away from something so seemingly benign, yet they allow unabated discussion on topics such as child pornography.
Last time I checked, telling somebody how to hotwire a car or pick a lock was not illegal. Why would SDMB be afraid of a suit? I’m not a lawyer, but I don’t see any legal grounds. I also don’t think we’d ever see the sad day the RIAA would attack a message board. They’re low, but they’re not that low.
Everyone says this topic has been beaten to death, and would probably suggest I drop the issue. But I just wanted to let everyone know (if anyone cares) that I think the prinicipal of the restriction is wrong, at least as I understand it.
