Do men lose hair on lower legs as they age due to use of socks or natural aging?

Is this a whoosh? MPS is a type of storage disorder affecting much, much more than hair on the legs (read your own link). More to the point, dietary sugar ingestion has no effect on the body’s production of the culprit glycosaminoglycans which accumulate in the various types of this disorder. (The Wiki statement about dietary sugar decrease and decreased mucous production is unreferenced, as it should be - there are none.)

Yup. Same here, although mine started in my early thirties when my job(s) required me to wear tube socks due to needing boots. It’s the same thing with guys that wear hats all the damn time and wonder why they go bald.

I have noticed that the hair on the back of my legs has left me. I do have dry skin, I use oils and other alpha hydroxy lotions. I was told to use sugar and yogurt mixed as a paste, it has really helped the dry skin, still no hair. I do not wear high socks or pants. I wear ankle socks and shorts, year around. I am very active and have a great sex drive. The posts above make me laugh, the best so far seems to be the age issue. I have noticed most men my age or older have hardly any hair on their legs at all. Best wishes to you at accepting what comes naturally.

66 and my legs are just as harry as when I was 20. And I wear socks all the time unless I am bare foot. Though they are a little harder to see. White.

This thread keeps dying and coming back, with a shorter hiatus each time.

Over 100,000 views so it’s apparently a common question, at least for zombies.

My calf hair has really thinned out, but I’ve recently tested negative for diabetes or low testosterone. The rest of my hair is still thick. My doctor said it may be hereditary. I only wear socks maybe 1/4 of the day on days that I’m working or spending time in town. I do wear slacks quite a bit, so I wonder if the calves rubbing against the slacks would have an effect.

Anybody else remember bell bottoms? I had bald patches on the back of my calves since they acted like clappers. Since they were tight around the thighs, I had a bald patch where my car keys always rubbed my thigh.

add another to the list … been shedding the hair from lower extremities for years now … my niece randomly asked me one day , “do you shave your legs” :o … a nice little sign of just how much has shed … still have a good amount but there’s a lot gone around the back and the area above the ankle …

hopefully this little ‘condition’ doesn’t start creeping up to my facial hair … that’s where I draw the line !

I’ve also had a quad bypass and have PAD, but the hair loss on my legs is ONLY of the front, while the back of my legs are still pretty hairy. I DO have a few rare spots of hair on the fronts, like a bit just above and below the knees, so I don’t understand how poor circulation would cause the pattern loss I have. Even though I’m about to turn 58, I still love to wear shorts(or preferably nothing while indoors) and I avoid socks and shoes as much as possible, so that rules out the friction issue. I’m completely at a loss here. I’ve had some issues that correlate to low testosterone levels, and my Dr. said my levels was “normal”, but the normal he said I had was only 36 points inside a VERY wide range of numbers for T-levels, going all the way up to(depending on which lab is used) somewhere between 8-1200! I wonder who’s “normal” I have, an 80 year old diabetic man? In anyone’s opinion, would a vibrator(no, not THAT kind of vibrator! lol) be helpful with circulation issues? Just curious, because in spite of my age and cardiac health, I still LOOK like I’m in my very early 40’s, not just a couple years shy of being 60! It’s embarrassing to have my legs look like I’ve shaved the fronts while the backs look good, and I’m not about to shave the backs just so both sides match! LOL

I am 77 (78 in a few weeks) and the only place where I’ve lost any hair is on top of my head, but I started losing hair there in my 20s, and I think I stopped losing it there years ago (but there isn’t much not to lose). I’ve only worn athletic socks since I retired at 65.

I am 53 and live in south-west France which means I get to wear shorts (and no socks) from June - September. In recent years I was always pleased to see how in summer my leg hair seemed to flourish in the warm weather, which combined with a light tan just looked well, healthy. But last July my bro came to visit from Scotland (no-shorts territory) and I was shocked to see that he had lost all his leg hair and most of his arm hair. He still has more head hair than me tho. He is also rather overweight and I suspect the two are connected.

Anyway, this year disaster struck. I had been cycling and walking more and more this year, but wearing jeans, and in March I saw that I had lost all the hair on the outside of my shins/calves. The inside still went down to the ankles. Skin on back of calves is very dry, almost scaly looking. Had to trim remaining leg hair down to 1cm with my beard trimmer cos it looked so odd!

In April I took up running and now run about 30km a week, plus some cycling. I wear shorts and no socks for these activities. I also exfoliate and moisturise the skin on my calves to improve the skin texture. Am happy to say that my leg hair is now growing back, even down below the sock line, albeit very slowly. The thing about leg hairs is that they are very fine, and spaced far apart, but grow quite long, and it is only when the hairs reach about 1" in length that they start to overlap and form into bunches, giving the appearance of “hairy legs” which we so desire!

I am sure that in mine and in many cases it is the whiplash movement of jeans while walking and/or the restrictive elastic in socks that causes most lower leg hair loss. However, if you are overweight and/or have hormonal imbalances or diabetes it could be more serious.

I’m chalking up the hair loss on my lower legs to the compression stockings I’ve worn for 20 years. I have no PAD, just varicose veins(thanks, Mom) The area above the top of the stockings is nearly as hairy as it was prior to wearing them. If it HAD to go away, why couldn’t it have traveled up to my bald head?

Zombies are hairless…did we make that clear? I mean, Brainnnsssss, or something. (This must be an oft googled condition).

I’m a guy who moved to Denver in January, and I wore jeans or long pants every day for the first 3 months. I noticed that I had developed hairless patches on my legs where the jeans rubbed the most. I ended up shaving my legs entirely, and now groom them about once a week (I know, I know…). I also have had the sock induced ankle baldness when I was wearing dress socks to work every day.

And I’m a perfectly healthy 38 year old, so it’s not a circulation thing for me.

I’m a 66 y/o guy who’s worn atheletic socks most of my life. At about 55, I started to notice the hair loss on my calves and it was all gone within a few years. I thought the hair loss on the calves was from the socks, but now I think it has to do with aging and circulation. :dubious: Now, I have no hair on my thighs as well. There are a couple of little sprigs above my knees, but that’s it. :smack:I remember my father had no hair on his legs, but since he was already in his 50’s when I was born, I don’t know if he had hair before that. At any rate, I used to have fairly hairy legs that earned me the nickname “spider legs” from a couple of girlfriends. I still have lots of hair on my head and even though my hair may be thinning a bit, there’s plenty of it and I"m only about 10% grey. I’ve talked to old friends that are the same age, and for the most part, they’re having the same problem. By the way. even men under 40 can have phlebitis and other circulation problems even if they feel alright.

Are you diabetic? That’s what did it for me, and others.

I’m in North Carolina…and I always hated the look of hair loss where I would wear socks. Thought I was immune to this and then it happened over a period of time…at some point during my 40s. I’m now 59. During the winters here, long pants are necessary…generally I would wear jeans…and yes, the hair would go away rather quickly when I had to start wearing jeans again…which are the worst for making it happen…by the end of summer, the hair had begun to grow back. This year, I had to go to Palm Springs in April…and so this year have had a much more extended time to not wear long pants…and the hair has almost come entirely back…even places where it never had a chance to grow back…knees…calves and finally, for the first time at the sock line! What more proof does one need? I will be avoiding long pants this winter.

My lower leg hair loss came from wearing combat boots for three years.

My girlfriend, now my wife, noticed it when we first started dating! It was VERY well defined! Now that I’m in my sixties, not so much.

But there is no question that the boots along with the socks were the cause.

Also, I started wearing a hat all the time after I got out of the Army because I was so well trained, I guess. The hair on my head is as thick as when I was 20 years old! So caps do not cause balding! At least not in my case.

Your what is hairy?..

Reviving this zombie to state that I was surprised how much my lower-calf hair came back after I quit dressing up to go to work. I wear socks very infrequently now and hair on my inner calf is re-growing clear down to my ankle.

My outer calves lost even more hair because in my home work chair I frequently sit with my legs on the chair, tucked to the side. This rubs the outer side of my ankle. This is something I never did at my work office.

So that is pretty conclusive for me. Rubbing removes the hair, whether by socks or another mechanism.

I have found that hair higher up on my front outer thighs where my pants pockets hang has been “worn away” for 30 years or more, since I was in my twenties.
