I had to buy a cheap mat for mine (and it’s been a little wiggly). So are most bathtubs built with anti-slip bumps or ridges? Or is that rare? It would seem to be a common sense idea.
In my experience new tubs don’t have anti-slip features since not everyone wants them and they’re easy to add yourself later. I sometimes buy appliqués that stick to the bottom of tub and that has always worked for me.
I’ve always had to either buy a mat or install something anti slip on my own. Mats work much better for me.
I stuck one of these things in mine:
You can buy anti-slip baths, but it’s not a given
I’ve only had tubs with anti-slip stuff in rentals. When we replaced our tub/shower insert we were adamant that we didn’t want it. As a bath-taker, I hate it.
My fiberglass tub (not the cheap acrylic) has a slightly rough texture on the bottom. It is still somewhat slippery when soapy water is on it so I added a mat. The problem is, the mat suction cups will not stick on the rough surface. I have to twist the mat so the corners are off the textured part.
Our 4.yo. house has a shower and a tub with the aforesaid rough texture. No slips yet but concerning. And the texture means that the usual appliques don’t last long.
We use the appliques, they work great. We tried the mat but it got bacteria build-up under it. Then we started rinsing it off after use and hanging up to dry but that became a hassle. No skid stickers work the best.
Do most bathtubs have anti-slip floors?
Short answer: no, most do not.
Same here. The appliques don’t stay stuck very well on the textured surface.
Almost never? I rarely see textured tub or shower surfaces and I see a lot of bathrooms with work. One issue is bath tubs get soap scum and any anti slip surface is going to be harder to clean soap scum off of. I can’t recall tubs for sure but I have definitely seen a few acrylic shower bases thet were textured and they tend to look dirty.
When we do renovations with tile shower bases or bathroom floors it is standard practice to use unglazed tile to reduce risk of slipping.
I do highly recommend a proper grab bar anchored into studs. I had to put one in for my hip surgery and although I don’t really need it any more, it is sure nice to have a solid hold in reach.
Showers often have something. We put one of those rubber suction cup mats in the bathtub.
