A while ago, there was a “what drugs have you done” thread, in which a suprising number of people said that they had done some heavy drugs, mainly cocaine. Those who posted are still alive and intelligent after years of use. is this typical? Do the majority of cocaine users get out of their habit after a period of time?
I thought this was going to be about SDMB rehab. I don’t think anyone ever recovers from posting here.
Havok, I can’t say whether the majority do or don’t, but most folks with serious illicit drug problems either die or reach a point where they simply can’t tolerate thier own behavior any longer. I would be quite surprised if there was a large number of people past their 50s who had substantial coke or opiate habits. Other drugs, such as alcohol or sedatives can lend themselves to very long term maintenance habits, with alcohol probably the most common of these, though this will usually lead to or exacerbate health problems.
porcupine, I had the same thought upon seeing the thread title.
just Leary.

Depends on your definition of heavy drug use. Freud did pretty well for himself and the fairy dust. I think there is a certain personality type who can sustain an addiction, be it alcohol or coke, and NOT have it interfere with their life. Someone who ultra-compartmentalizes their life. I also think that very few people CAN do that. Statistically, I’d say the AA saying that every addict either dies or bottoms out is true.
Why wouldn’t they be? I’m curious what sterotypes you have about cocaine use and what it does to users. And shouldn’t this be in GQ?
