Well, I must admit that it did always sound like an Urban Legend to me, but in the days before the Internet, I couldn’t be bothered to go look it up, and since the Internet, I’d pretty much forgotten about it until now. But it can’t be nostalgia that makes the Singha in Hawaii taste different to me, because I’ve gone straight from Thailand to Hawaii and back again in a matter of weeks, so Ithe nostalgia effect didn’t have time to kick in. Dunno.
I don’t much care for American beers, especailly Bud. MGD and Samuel Adams were my choice if I did drink some, followed distantly by Coors. This was in the days before micro-breweries. And there was not much in the way of imports where I grew up.
There are some nice brews in Southeast Asia. Laos has a nice one in Beer Lao, which I’ve come to prefer over Singha. It’s just starting to pick up steam here in Thailand, too. Cambodia puts out a decent tipple called Angkor Beer; some people hate it, though, but I like it. And then there’s Tiger Beer from Singapore, which has come to be known as “the poor man’s premium beer.” Heineken has become popular here, but I’ve never been able to like it, try as I might.
As for temperature, I generally like my beer COLD cold, but I admit there are some types that do taste better not too cold, or even at room temperature.
