About even? The only console that is “about even” is the Xbox 360 Arcade, which has the same amount (512 MB,) but I personally don’t know anyone who has the Arcade. Even most non-computer/tech-savvy people know not to get the Arcade. And besides, it is easy to buy a hard drive for the Arcade. Yes, it’s pricey for the amount too, but no modding or serious tech skills are required, you just snap it in and BAM, 120 GB more storage. The best you can hope for with the Wii is only 32 GB, and you’re going to pay a lot more “per gig,” too…and that’s with just a generic SD card! A lot of non-tech people also don’t realize you don’t need an “official Nintendo” SD card and pay even more than they need to, and often times don’t get the larger capacity because they go to a game store, not an electronics store, and the biggest “official Wii” SD card I’ve seen in a Gamestop is only 4 GB.
And to even try and compare storage with a PS3 is laughable, since the lowest amount any version of the PS3 has had is 20 GB.
Look, I love my Wii (heh…), I think it has a great selection of games, and the VC is the shit, but the fact remains that there is no excuse for at the very least not releasing another version that has more internal capacity, a few gigs at least. Charge a bit more for it, and keep the current Wii at it’s $199 price point. Especially since there are a LOT of good games on the PSN and XBLA that will never become WiiWare since they are over Nintendo’s size limit.
Hold on, wait a minute. Couldn’t you keep the hard drive, get a SD card of whatever, and store crap on the hard drive unless you wanted to access it on the Wii, in which case you could pop the SD card in the reader, and dump the files out on the card and pop it in the Wii?
Does it work that way?
I … haven’t actually tried it, mostly because it sounds damn inconvenient, but now I’m going to see if I can figure out what filesystem the Wii formats a memory card with.
Man, I must really be under-utilizing my Wii! I had no idea there were updates or that you could download games. We just play a few kid games and WiiFit. I thought I was branching out when we bought a game that required a microphone!
First, for official releases there’s the shopping channel that should be part of your Wii’s main menu. It has a few new games and a lot of old stuff for other platforms.
Second, there’s a technique that Nintendo is obligated for various reasons to try to block where you can trick your Wii into running any code that’s given to it. A search for Wii and Homebrew should help you locate assistance with that stuff but I won’t link to it here since it can be used for Evil®. I actually like playing Quake on the Wii though I have to remember that I don’t need to take everyone down with headshots.
Evil® is a registered trademark of the Microsoft Corporation
It’s nowhere, just like all the bricked console stories go. You see it with all three consoles after various updates. A bunch of people, and then they quietly disappear a week or so after the bad update.
It wouldn’t surprise me if it was fanboys just trying to stir things up. I don’t think it’s likely, but it wouldn’t surprise me.
Your comments make no sense to me. Are you saying Red Barchetta is making up knowing up knowing people who work for Nintendo? And do you have a cite for previous Wii updates allegedly bricking consoles? I’ve never heard of this before this update.
Quite the opposite. I’m saying that everything Red Barchetta mentioned in post #3 is probably right on the money. This happens all the time with console updates and due to the fact that it’s already disappeared, it was likely just a handful of people.
As for cites, just go to Google and search for brick [console name] and limit the dates to last year or the year before. Watch the reports pile up.
We can agree on the idea that it’s mostly hysteria at least. I know a few people who got their Wii’s bricked, but they were all running Homebrew and USB HD Loader.
Sorry, I got lazy. I somehow seemed to care less after making that post
I can still check if you like (I used to work at Nintendo as a CSR), and still have friends who work there.
Just found this response from Nintendo: “Nintendo of America’s consumer service department has received less than 200 inquiries regarding system menu update (SMU) 4.2 since it launched on September 28, 2009.” http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=99587
Is it not like the DS where they could have reinstalled the official bootloader, upgraded it, and waited the five days it took to make a patch for the new firmware? And I do know they’ve got some sort of file that will make it where your Wii won’t ever try to update on you.
In other words, was anyone actually caught by surprise?
