Do some people have no sense of hot or cold?

Inspired by several anecdotes over the years, online and off, of people, presumably insane and at least observably eccentric, who among their other quirks wear the same outfit no matter what the weather.

I had a thought. What if there were people who actually could not sense when it was hot or cold? Sort of like people who cannot feel pain. But only the insane or eccentric people would wear the same thing all of the time: everyone else would either bundle up for safety’s sake or because they didn’t want to stand out.

Of course there are other reasons for wearing the same outfit all the time (the devil’s gonna get you if you don’t, trying to keep up your appearance as the local flavor, etc.) but could a physical resistance to the sensation of cold or heat be a factor?

(Note I am not talking about people whose bodies cannot adjust to different temperatures, the people that basically cannot go outside in the summer or winter or they’ll die, just ones who cannot sense it.)

I’m not aware of any high-quality scientific research done on this, but it is generally accepted “psychiatry lore” that people with schizophrenia often will not adjust their wardrobe to account for weather conditions. I know if I see someone wearing a winter coat in summer into my office, I have a good idea ahead of time of the general nature of the problem.

I don’t think this reflects an inability to sense hot or cold (that would be a neurological problem, and since the various types of nerve endings do double and triple duty, someone totally insensitive to hot and cold would also have lots of other sensory deficits). I think they are just less apt to notice and be concerned about sensations that most of us would interpret as uncomfortable.
