Do the Presidential Libraries have any Classified Documents?

Presidents used to keep their Documents and Created Presidential Libraries.

Did any Classified materials go to the Presidential Libraries?

Were documents aged and sent later? For Example, Reagan’s Presidential documents are now 32 years old. A lot of that material is long obsolete.

From the website of the National Archives

Presidential Libraries hold more than 30 million pages of textual classified materials and more than 1,000 rolls of classified microfilm from the Franklin D. Roosevelt through George W. Bush Presidential administrations. In addition, the Libraries hold more than three terabytes of classified electronic records.

In other words, yes.

Scholars and Researchers would have to meet Security clearances.

The Clinton Presidential library is local. The public can go through and see exhibts. I’ve heard you need scholastic credentials to access any documents. Even the lunch menu for Jan 5, 1996. :grinning:

There’s also a Graduate School for Public Service that associated with the Library.

Note that most presidential libraries are administered by National Archives and Records Administration.

I understand the Documents are professionally handled and filed. Clinton for example wouldn’t have them in his desk.

All of the presidential libraries from Herbert Hoover to Trump are NARA-administered. I’m guessing there’s no classified material from before 1928 in any of the privately-operated libraries and collections for previous presidents. (Trump’s library is still in the planning stages.)

Two weeks to go?

Googling, Clinton’s presidential library cost $165 million, $300 million was raised for GWB’s library and Obama’s library cost about $500 million and it’s not yet open. At that rate, Trump will need to raise upwards of a billion dollars for his library.

I am actually baffled at the insane push for Presidential Libraries - 200 million, 500 million - christ on a cracker, the infrastructure of the country could use that money to better effect than a building worshipping one person simply for getting elected.

I mean, expand the actual archives, give each president their own large room of documents and crap and call it good. All the researchers can go there, it will have lovely security, and restricted access, and one stop on a bus tour. Good to go…

Last time I took a poli sci class and needed information on a specific president, I needed extra info from the library of Congress, if I had been in East Bumfuck Mo, I would have to drop what I was doing, go to DC, spend 4 days there, then hoik back up for Asscrap Mo.

That’s pretty much what they’re doing for Obama and his successors AFAIK. The “Obama Library” in Chicago is going to be a completely private museum. The actual library of documents will be held in National Archives warehouses.

Pretty sure that the Presidential libraries are privately funded.

If people get tax deductions for donating to it, it’s sorta publicly funded, isn’t it?

Hm, if the average Presidential Library costs multiple hundred million dollars, the money has to come from somewhere - I don’t think most presidents are billionaires - not sure but I am pretty certain Obama couldn’t come up with $300 mil by himself.

And honestly, if I were an ex president, I would be plunking my crap in DC, let someone else deal with curation. I know exactly how expensive maintaining my mom’s antiques are - and I would not want to dick around with more than the 2000 sq feet of house I do have to maintain.

They are funded primarily via donations from individuals and corporations, and they are typically placed in locations that have some meaning to the ex Potus. They are usually big tourist attractions and drive tourism revenue for the communities where they are located.

Only presidential anything I would pay money for is to have Trump paraded across a walkway wearing orange. They could promenade him 25 feet in front of an audience and charge $5US a viewing, they would make a freaking fortune.

In all my assorted facebook friends describing what they did on vacation trips, I have never heard any one of them discussing a presidential library. DC, Mt Rushmore, Disney’s animatronix presidents. Not one person [and a number of them are into politics or at least the intelligent discussion of politics] have ever mentioned wanting to go see anything presidential libraryish.

[though more than one said they would gladly pay per view Trumps trial, so would I =) ]

No.

Maybe you need better friends.

By coincidence my mother was talking a couple days ago about one time she was visiting her sister and they went to the Jimmy Carter library. Mom isn’t political and I have no idea how she feels about Carter but she does like history. She said she enjoyed going there a lot.

Thus the “sorta”–if it is funded by private donations, and those donations are tax deductible, that represents money that could have been collected and used by the government in the name of the public. Thus, it represents a loss to “the public,” doesn’t it?

No, because the government expects a certain amount of foregone tax associated with charitable contributions.

I guess if you wanted to be a strict literalist, the Federal government has the ability to tax all money earned by the people at a 100%, and when it sets the rates and deductions that limits its ability to collect those funds all that money represents a loss to “the public”. But that would be a stupid premise.
