For playing in the Superbowl, do the players get extra money just for being in the Bowl? If so, how much? Also, how much do the winners get and losers get?
According to about.com, players on the winning team get $73,000 and ones on the losing team get $38,000 this year. There’s also a historical list.
And that is a mere pittance compared to how they can leverage that into eventual earnings. By all means, yes, winning or getting to a Super Bowl has financial implications for the individuals involved.
Some players get extra cash written into their contracts. Rex Grossman, quarterback for the Bears, made an extra million dollars just for getting to the Super Bowl.
Not a bad 3-4 hours pay either, huh?
and over a hundred hours of practice.
How much do the non star players make? The rookie minimum salary seems to be $260,000 going up to $750,000 or so after 10 years. I don’t know how many players get this minimum but $76,000 out of $260,000 is a pretty significant percentage. I would imagine the people being paid the lower salaries go bring in the endorsement bucks.
Each player (and coaches & other staff) also get a custom Super Bowl ring, with a value of $10,000 to $18,000.
Do players get extra money just for making the post-season? I mean, it’s an extra month or so of work, not to mention the risk of getting hurt and ending a career.
I don’t have positive proof for football, but in baseball players on all the playoff teams plus those on the second place teams that don’t make the playoffs, get a bonus.
That’s true. When you break it down, he probably wasn’t making more than $50,000 an hour. It’s got to be hard to stay motivated.
In Tim Green’s The Dark Side Of The Game, he writes that the pay for playoff games is paltry compared with regular season games. The stars can look for big raises after getting to the SB, but the grunts are working extra weeks for less pay. By the end of the regular season, players are in constant pain, and they’re looking forward to healing up. Many players, Green says, hope to lose in the playoffs, so they can go home.
Yes. There’s playoff pay for each game of the postseason. This year:
Wild Card round - Division winner player gets $19K, Wild card team gets $17K
Divisional playoff round - Every player gets $19K
Conference championship round - Every player gets $37K
Super Bowl - Players on winning team each get $73K, losing team players get $38K
So, in fact, Indianapolis players got the most playoff pay possible, since they played the Wild Card round as division winners - they each got $148K in playoff pay.
I’m not following that. If you are a lower salary player, you are less of a “star” and therefore your opportunity for endorsements would be less.
