I find over the course of the last 12 months I’ve been messing up a lot of words with my spelling. I’ll often mix up 2 letters by accident.
It usually involves inverting 2 letters, not more than that.
When I searched “Dyslexia” on wikipedia, it didn’t mention that people could develop this as an adult.
Has anyone heard of this occurring in middle age people? (I’m 44)
I’ve made an appointment to see my family doctor, but in the meantime, is this a normal thing, or should I be worried?
It honestly doesn’t sound too worrisome. You are probably misspelling words at the exact same rate that you have been in the past. The only thing that has likely changed is the fact that you are more self conscious about it and hence noticing it more frequently.
If you suddenly began making frequent spelling errors, and then failed to identify said errors until someone else pointed them out to you, then that would be worrisome. Even still, couldn’t hurt to talk to a doc.
Has it happened in handwriting or in typing? I do it often as a typo, but not in longhand. In my case, it comes from trying to type faster than I really can; it also usually happens with letters which are very close in the keyboard (e and r, for example).
I have something like this, only I’m more likely to skip letters. It started around age 45, and I never had a habit of skipping letters before. I haven’t seen a doctor about it yet, but I will if it noticeably gets worse.
