When we paid off our house early, we kept all the paperwork. I didn’t ever want to have something come up where through some special quirk the mortgage company would come back down the road and claim we owed them something, and then we’d have to scramble to get a copy of the original documentation. We went out for dinner instead.

A few years ago my parents’ church burned the physical mortgage agreement. Fun times.
