My wife and I have been watching Cops on G4. Yes, we’re ashamed.
Anyway, they advertise this machine that resharpens razor blades. You put the blade in the machine and it spins some kind of flaps around that sharpen the blade again. The ad claims that you can sharpen blades back to new and do it a few times.
Both my wife and I doubt the machine’s abilities, but are curious if anyone has one.
I’m not sure if it works, but I’ve heard that you get more life out of a razor blade if you store it in rubbing alcohol, to prevent the blade from dulling. I do this, although I still replace my disposable blade every week.
I have heard Clark Howard say that if you thoroughly dry the blades with a clean cloth, it will last practically forever.
Noted cheapskate that he is, he buys the disposable Bics. He said on his radio show recently that he has been using the same razor for five months, by making sure it is dry after he’s done with it.
Hmmph. Your razor blade is unlikely to rust on you. What’s more likely is that the blade is getting used and slightly warped, so when Mr. Howard is buffing it dry, he’s honing it – just like you do with a knife.
You’ve bought into the myth that razor blades are too dull to use after a week. While it was true 70 years ago, stainless steel blades hold their edge three weeks or more. I often went a month (before I stopped shaving all together).
No, it’s the removal of water. And yes it works. I shake all the water off I can and then hit it with a hair dryer. I use to get a week out of a blade. I just started this a month ago so I don’t know how long it extends the blade I use (M3 power) but it seems to works. I’m the first person to throw away a dull blade. It’s just not worth the pain to keep using a dull blade.
What you will loose over time is the lubricating strip. I wet down the shaving cream for a thinner layer and then top it off with a heavier layer. I also shave twice in the morning to get the shave I want so I already double the use of each blade.
In my case it may be due to the hardwater in my house. Don’t know. If I get consistent use by drying the blade I’m going to try using baby oil but for now the test is just the drying technique.
Not being much of a TV watcher means I haven’t seen the device mentioned in the OP.However,I do have a razor blade sharpener made circa 1910,for safety razors.A circular device, entirely nickle plated, one side polished for use as a mirror. The other has a folding crank that upon rotation presents a holder for the blade which once mounted, with continued cranking, will present one side of the blade to an abrasive charged lapping disc and after X number of turns flip over to do the other side.
Yes,it works well, but only for edge maintenance, not restoration.
Ha. I have a horrible/great pseudoscience book that has a chapter on pyramid power-- including razor sharpening, and this was the first thing I thought of when I read the title of this thread.
Well that’s your problem right there! You need to go get yourself a real razor. I prefer a straight razor, but since Babyrian came along I rarely have the time, so I use a Feather safety razor.
