Do we actually need sebum?

Sebum is oil that your skin secretes. Its allegedly supposed to moisturize your skin and prevent deliver antioxidants, but it can also cause acne and dandruff. Another bad thing about sebum is that the same bacteria that contributes to acne also produces odors.
P. Acnes makes a greasy vinegar like smell that causes your hair to stink if you don’t wash it in a while.

Prepubescent children produce very little sebum, yet most kids don’t have flaky or ashy skin. So how does their skin stay moisturized without sebum? When I was a kid I rarely every had to put lotion on my face. My body was dryer but my face wasn’t . Some people claim that sebum protects the skin from the sun’s rays, but my skin seems to be more sun sensitive as an adult than when i was a kid.

Maybe the main point of sebum is to make you stink?

Plenty of other animals develop a distinctive odor when they reach sexual maturity. Why shouldn’t humans?

True, but the thing is that most people associate the butt, genitals and arm pits as the areas that produce odors.
