Do we care if Casey Anthony's parents pass a lie detector test?

Been seeing ads for this show for a few weeks.

Is this about the dumbest thing these people could ever do?

I assume they’re getting loads of cash. Otherwise, just why?

That’s how I felt. If I were one of her parents, you can bet I’d shut up about it and hope no one recognized me.

Cash for sure.

I think that the results of lie detector tests are not admissible in court. But if someone will not take one that seems to automatically put them under suspcion. I took one once, as part of a job application. On the day the job was supposed to start I was called and told not to come in, that the test had showed prevarication. I have no idea what that meant and they would not talk about it. All I know is I answered every question with complete honesty. Since then I do not trust the lie detector results.

I’m no expert, but I’ve always thought it was mostly junk-science.

lie detectors are good (very good) at detecting stress IF AND ONLY IF the subject isn’t trying to hide the stress or throw off the results. It’s like an old oral thermometer. If I keep it under my tongue for the right amount of time, it’s great at giving my temperature. If I take it out too soon, or hold it next to an incandescent bulb etc the readings are worthless.

Refusing to take a polygraph is not suspicious to me. They are worthless at detecting lies. The person reading the test may say you were lying when you were being honest.

I worked for a while at a small company specializing in biofeedback and medical sensors. I was wired up many times to demonstrate use of hardware and software. Great at detecting stress, but only if you aren’t trying to throw off the readings.

It is a junk science that allows interviewers to claim credit for any good hires that come along, while absolving them if the “lie detector” fucks up.

Yes this. I believe I wouldn’t draw attention to myself.

I teeny tiny respected Casey for keeping her mouth shut for so long.
I assume it was advice or self preservation that prompted it. But still…

Then I saw she did a whole series of shows last year. I’ve only seen bits of it. But I understand she threw George under the bus, big time.

Yep. Expert Operators will read your other clues and decide if you are lying or decide in advance if you are guilty. Then they can point at any blip and say “YOU ARE LYING” trying to get a confession.

They do detect stress. But why wouldnt they have some stress over this?

The CIA uses them a lot, and several Soviet spies passed with flying colors.

Seems they are as well thought of as those Scientology electrode thingys.

:zap:

Aaccccckkk! How can I trust science ever again!!?

If someone made me take an orgasm-detector test for a job, I’d hit them with a sexual harassment lawsuit. I don’t know why anyone considers them acceptable.

O–kay.

When I was in high school I was applying for a job at TGI Fridays as a bus boy (this is back when TGI Fridays was new and exciting). They made me take a polygraph to get the job…for a bus boy position.

So, I sat for the polygraph and answered honestly to everything (I had no criminal background and nothing worth lying about at age 16 to a restaurant). At the end of the test I was walking out with the guy who administered the test and asked him what the question, “Do you have any hidden reasons for wanting this job” meant? He smiled and said it was good I asked because it was the one question I failed. Apparently, me sitting their for a few moments wondering what in the world the question meant blipped the machine suggesting I was lying.

I got the job. It was also an insight for me into the machine’s operation.

(Apparently the question was asking if I was a corporate spy trying to learn TGI Friday bus boy secrets or something.)

I’ve never seen statistics on how many people believe Casey’s claims that her father (or father and mother) had something to do with the child’s death. Offhand I’d guess it’s a definite minority of those who have heard of the case.

No, I don’t care if the parents “pass” a lie detector test. As many have said, the tests don’t prove anything. If they get a few bucks from the production company of the upcoming TV show, more power to them.

There are defense lawyers who support their clients getting a polygraph test - if it’s the defense’s expert.

If they pass, it’s a tool to whack the prosecution with. If they fail, the result can help convince recalcitrant clients facing lots of evidence of their guilt that they’d be better off taking a plea.

The Employee Polygraph Protection Act of 1988 preventing employers from using polygraphs as part of the candidate selection process save for certain occupations. If you’ve taken one to get a job in the last 35 years there’s a good chance that employer violated the law.

Can the Anthony’s possibly say enough, on air, to get themselves in trouble? I mean it was a murder case.

Of course if they fail miserably and the world sees it, the court of public opinion might sway some real life DA or whatever to get all antsy about bringing charges.

They can’t be making an advisable decision here.
Someone needs to shut them up.

ETA…then again if they’re perfectly innocent then who cares they get the money while they can.

In the private sector, anyway

Government jobs aren’t covered by it

I didn’t think they were perfect before that but thought there had to be something more scientific to it. After taking one, I lost all respect for them. I did not lie at all but the operator’s reactions, questions, and tone told me everything I needed to know, i.e. it was mostly based on what they had already concluded based on not much at all

They also read the faces and/or responses from those that hire them, trying to get a read on what answers would most please them. Repeat business is gold.

Wow. That’s a lot of balls to juggle.
They must be good at multitasking.

Not really. Once you figure out what the client wants, it is easy enough to rig the reading.
