Do you care what your smartphone looks like?

I don’t have or want a smart phone, but if I DID get a smart phone, it should be as inoffensive as all my other devices. Should be a solid color, and that color should be somewhere in the ‘white’ or ‘black’ families. Bright colors and patterns are right out.

Also, I hear there’s pie?

<double post>

I do have a preference of what color iPhone looks better, I really like the light purple of the 11 and I think the yellow one is ugly. Of course if the yellow one was cheaper, I would get that and just use a case, but since they are all the same in every other way, sure I will choose the color that looks nicer.

I’m in the “put a big-ass Otterbox on the phone the second it is removed from the box” camp. My iPhone X comes out of the case to change SIM cards when I travel or for cleaning. It looks factory fresh after 2 years of use.

Last choice ----- and DCnDC is my new favorite thread-started until someone else tempts me with pie.

Tried to sneak a second piece of pie when you didn’t think anyone was looking, didja?

Hypothetically, you’d want a Pixel then. They have colors like “Just Black” and “Clearly White.”

I never really thought about it but I guess I’d prefer a black or at least dark phone. This is only my second smartphone and they’ve both been black Samsungs. That’s not counting the LG ‘burner phone’ I use for our voip system at work but it’s also black on the face but a dark …slate(?) on the rear housing.

Never a case, though. I want to keep the thing as small as it can be.

I just get the smallest iPhone I can, and put the skinniest case on it. And I look at the screen, not the phone itself.

I like the features of the iPhone, but want to be able to forget I have it in my pocket. Kept my old 5 for ages, and was happy when they came out with the SE. Better camera, can run current iOS, but same tiny form factor.

And I do forget I have it… until it vibrates. Then I have to figure out which jacket or pants pocket I have it in. Speaking of pockets, the small-ish iPhone SE means I can jump on my bike with it in my back pocket and it fits to the side of my seat. So no danger of breakage.

The hamsters forced it on me! Honest!
(Hides third piece behind back.)

Yes and no. Mostly no. When I bought my current phone, I researched a lot of them and narrowed it down to four finalists with virtually identical specs. The Sony Xperia was the only one that looked different than all the others, so I selected it on that basis.

And I never use a case. If a phone is too slippery to hold, it gets crossed off my list.

Mine absolutely has to be this model:

Then I slap an Otterbox case on it.

I have a clear case on my android phone. Surely there are clear iPhone cases too, right?

I voted yes. I love the look of my iPhone 8 Plus in red.

I have 3 phones. (No, silly, I’m not a drug dealer) 1. My normal everyday phone, A Samsung Galaxy???.
2. My sooper seekrit spy phone (;))Samsung???
3. A hand-me-down Iphone for my DIL and diabetic Nurse to be in constant contact with me. It has an app for my CGM.
The smaller Samsung works better for me it’s small and plain black. Unobtrusive and fits in my pockets.
I hate the Iphone. It’s hard to use. And stupid looking.
I got an Apple watch for Christmas but I havn’t done anything with it yet.

I want to vote both for options 3 and 4. I care if it’s a radically different design, and if two phones are functionally the same I care some which looks nicer.

This

And I’m really surprised that most everyone here uses a case, because most of my friends don’t. How often do y’all drop those suckers? I’ve carried a pocket-gadget since I got a palm pilot in the late 90s, and while I’ve dropped them occasionally, I’ve never rendered one useless by dropping it. Once, the screen shattered. (in 20+ years) But the plastic-film screen protector did its job, and the phone was still perfectly usable. I did end up replacing the screen, when I got around to it, and that wasn’t horrifically expensive.

I want a phone that’s small a light and slips into my pocket. I don’t want to carry around a tank.

Notifies townfolk!

I don’t, because there’s something to hold onto. Phone in case fits into my rear pants pocket just fine.

I could have predicted the answers to this thread without reading a single one - a succession of posters claiming that design aesthetics don’t affect their purchasing decisions.

Come on people. Do you say the same about cars, shoes, glasses…? I don’t believe you.

We all make conscious and unconscious style choices every day. If looks of inanimate objects didn’t matter, product designers wouldn’t exist.

For me the top concern is price–every other consideration is weighed against that. Appearance is way down the line.

Going with the shoe analogy, do you choose shoes based on the color of the pad inside of it? Because I (and other people) see the back of my phone as often as the pad inside my shoe because my phone is always inside a case. Metal, plastic, glass, black, transparent, rainbow, it is utterly irrelevant because I don’t see or touch it.
