I do, because I abhor waste. Generally I save them for putting in soup though.
Sure! Just as good as any other piece of bread. Also, you can clearly see which side has been buttered!
Husband doesn’t like the heels. I’ll eat them, but they do tend to be tougher than the rest of the loaf if they aren’t toasted (which makes them as good or better than the rest of the loaf).
I’m very thrifty in the kitchen and would not dream of throwing them away. Usually they go into the freezer, into a big bag of heels, bread we couldn’t finish before it got stale, or loaves that came out a bit too dense. All those bread bits are turned into bread crumbs or bread cubes that get used in stuffings, meatloaves, etc.
My husband insists that the heel should be left on the bread until the end, so we will bypass that slice and leave it in the bag with the unfinished loaf. According to him, it keeps the rest of the loaf fresher. (I make all our bread, so there are no preservatives in it.) Personally I don’t think it makes any difference, but I humor him and go along with it.
Of course!
Honestly, they are sturdy enough to handle improvised meat sandwiches almost as well a roll, but without all the excess bread.
They aren’t ‘dainty’ so you use them for sandwiches which are not ‘dainty’.
(taylor ham egg & cheese, etc.)
Generally not. Taste and texture are different, and for my typical sandwiches, it’s different in a lesser way. So I don’t use them, nor does the Mrs. Unless we’re out of bread, in which case, hunger triumphs.
I no longer eat bread. But when I did, the heel was my favorite part.
I’ll eat the heels if that’s all that’s left. But I generally avoid them. The wifey likes them though.
My husband eats the heels, so I don’t.
The more crust, the better. Bring on the heels!!
Heels are for toasting and drenched in either butter or peanut butter. 3rd usage is as a backup hot dog bun.
Wait a minute. No, I don’t eat the ends of loafs. That’s disgusting! People just sitting around all day getting all soft and unappetizing. Nothing but a bunch of heels, I tells ya!!
Now, if you’re talking about the ends of loaves, that’s quite another thing.
In as much as I’m sure you are all fans of useless information, the interior of a loaf of bread is called the “crumb”.
And, yes, I eat the complete loaf… usually toasted.
I don’t like them as well as regular slices. But I’ll eat them rather than waste them by throwing them out. I usually use the two opposite ends together for a sandwich; I find they match each other better than either one matches a regular slice.
I eat them no issues. But everyone else in the house does not. I am sensing a pattern here for Dopers - does eating bread heels lead to higher intelligence?
I am going to add this question to my list of “There are two kinds of people in this world…”
Crusts are good for vegemite toast.
The heels are the best part!
That should have been a Seinfeld episode.
I flip the cut parts to the outside and make a grilled cheese with the crusts facing inside. You’d barely know the difference, except that they’re shorter.
I live alone. I haven’t gotten to the end of loaf of bread in a years.
Which brings up a tangential thought: why don’t they make half-a-loafs. That would be better than nothing. No?
I live with people who are too lazy to make sandwiches, so ditto. A small part of a moldy or stale loaf is usually thrown away. But I do like the ends for buttered toast.
There are plenty of places in NYC that bake half-size baguettes. I love a baguette heel.
Also, there was an article in the Times today about a Brooklyn baker that does ten-pound loaves of Jewish rye, and customers buy them by the inch.
