Ushers loved us! They’d done it too and kind of liked “stickin’ it to the man” (hey, it was the 60s). And if we found one we hadn’t talked to before, my favorite line was “Hey, I’ve got a bunch of time to kill before The Good, the Bad and the Ugly starts. You don’t mind if I watch Blow-Up first, do ya? Thanks!”
(last line thrown over my shoulder as I walked past… if he couldn’t formulate an answer in five seconds, that wasn’t my fault)
Not since I was in high school. Movies are so long now, I honestly don’t see the appeal of sitting around in a theater all day anymore. I have friends who do these movie marathons, e.g. all 10 oscar best picture nominees in one sitting, or famous trilogies back to back to back. Sounds like hell on the ol’ tushy to me. But then, I’m long past the point where I can even sit through a 150 minute movie without needing to make off to the restroom at some point.
Geez, of course it is. Did you see anyone asserting otherwise?
I’ve wondered what it would feel like to do this as an adult, and I decided I’d sweat all the way through the second movie, then I’d feel so guilty I’d try to pay extra at the box office. Which of course wouldn’t work, so then I’d tip all the ticket-takers until I equaled the cost of a ticket.
Can’t be done like that here in Finland - they check the tickets at the theater door, not at the entrance to the multiplex. I doubt I’d ever do it even if it was possible, though.
Back in the day, you could buy a ticket and sit in the cinema all day long, if you wanted too. Nobody cared how many times you saw the damned movie.
The last time I remember doing this was in 1977, when I saw Star Wars for the first time. My friends and I sat through it twice, and no one tried to shoo us out of the balcony.
Granted, that was in a big, old-fashioned motion picture palace. In 1985, I went to see 101 Dalmatians in a multiplex, intending to sit through it twice. It must have been my first time in one of the damned things, because I was surprised when the asshole ushers stood around waiting for the hall to empty before they opened the doors for the next showing.
I hate multiplexes. Because of them, going to the movies is not the experience it used to be.
I’ve never done that. The closest I’ve come is to stay to watch the same movie more than once. This was a common practice when I was a kid – you pretty often missed the beginning of a film, so you stayed to catch the beginning of the next show.
I think th last time I did this was during the initial run of Star Wars. I went the afternoon after it opened. Being midday, there were few people in the theater (kids weren’t skipping shoo, yet to watch it). I’d taken my last exams as an undergrad the previous day, so I was sort of celebrating. I watched Star Wars al the way through and stayed to watch it all over again. A cople of years later and I wouldn’t be able to do that – they started chasing people out between showings.
Edited to add – Ninja’s by terentii, who told the same story. I guess it was common in 1977.
Sure. Before all the AMCs became reserved seating, I’d theater hop all the time. I’d plan the showtimes out ahead of time. I pretty much never would see just one movie, it would always be two or sometimes even three.
This for me, too. I pretty much only see matinees, so the theaters are pretty empty. Plus I don’t go as often as I’d like, so there is usually a backlog of movies I’m at least slightly interested in. If I’m only seeing one movie, I rarely buy popcorn/soda - but if I’m making a day of it I will. So the theater actually makes out if I see more than one. Now days with the reseve seating, I’ll often buy the 2nd/3rd feature seat (and not bother to pick up the ticket) just to make sure I’m not in someone’s seat.
4 movies is my record fpr one day. I don’t remeber the movies but they were all pretty short, 90 min comedy types, no 3 hour epic adventures.
It isn’t stealing, it’s tresspassing. If we are going to go down the everything is stealing path, let’s talk about all the ad blockers people here are using that are robbing the SDMB of income.
I don’t think I’ve hopped between theaters. Even if the period where that sort of thing was more laissez faire wasn’t over, I just find the idea nerve wracking. Probably from seeing too many films where people doing sneaky things are continually in a state of just about to maybe be caught lol.
I did see a bunch of legit double features, which for some reason I only remember being a thing they did at drive in theaters.
There were also a couple of films I saw as a kid that I liked so much I convinced the adults to let me stay for the next showing. Notably, The Last Unicorn.
I’ve also been to two films so long that they had intermission, Gone With The Wind, and Places in the Heart (which charged an extra fifty cents at the dollar theater!).
I’ve never done two different movies. i guess my learned Catholic Guilt prevented me.
but I did sit through Wrath of Khan twice in a row on the first week. They didn’t kick me out. I might have even got a popcorn refill. During the downtime, I worried that I was wastin my timne, that it wouldn’t be as good the second time. I was so wrong!
The only time I’ve seen a double feature was in a theater that had a double feature. Honestly, I’m hard pressed to come up with one movie I want to see these days, let alone two.
