I voted “It’s more complex than that. Let me explain…”
I’ve gotten less conservative as I’ve grown older. However, I was raised by a moderate and a ultra right wing republican and had those beliefs drilled into me as a kid, so it’s not like I could have gotten any more conservative without deciding to have a baby a year until my uterus falls out.
I’m still very pro-life, pro-immigration reform, pro smaller government, pro (but very limited use of the) death penalty etc and have yet to find a democrat I’d vote for president for (I’ve voted for democrats in all other positions, however) but socially I’m less conservative than when I began voting in the mid-90s, mostly due to having met lots of gay men and women who are way too awesome to think don’t deserve the same rights and privileges as the rest of us, and I’m more mello in religious convictions too, so I’m no fan of the religious part of the party.
Yeah, why is that option missing from this poll?
I’ve been left for awhile, but I started out a Rush Limbaugh listening and reading Republican. Granted I was still in my late teens when I started moving to the left, but I’ve probably gotten more left in most things as I’ve gotten older, although there are certain things I’m more “right wing” about. (Like gun ownership, even though I personally do not own a gun.) My personal finances are done with a fiscally conservative attitude (I’m self-employed, provide my own healthcare, invest in my own retirement, no credit card debt, etc.), but my own views on national economic policy are more leftist.
My parents, too, have generally moved to the left as they’ve gotten older. They both, as far as I know, even voted for Barack Obama in the last election, and I don’t think I’ve ever heard of either of them voting for a Democrat in a national race before. (Chicago elections are different.) Their attitudes have very much softened up, especially on socially conservative issues.
