I think it is an instinctive reflex to hold one’s breath or stop breathing when your face encounters something cold wether it’s air, water, snow. Must be a survival instinct to keep you from inhaling water if you happen to plunge into a pond.
During scuba training we were at the bottom of a freezing cold lake and one of the tasks was to remove and then replace your mask while continuing to breath through the regulator in your mouth. When that cold water hit me in the face it took everything I had to continue inhaling-exhaling as my body didn’t seem to want me to do it.
In my life I’ve had to turn my face away from the wind to breath. But it had to be really windy and I had to be walking directly into the wind. I don’t remember the last time it happened.
Windy weather also often corresponds to low pressure-- That might contribute a little.
It happens to me in very windy conditions. I think it’s specifically the wind, not general atmospheric pressure. Once a friend took me for a ride in his convertible with the top down. When we were on the freeway doing about 70, I was in serious distress. I felt like I just couldn’t breathe and was gasping for breath.
I wonder if this is some thing I should talk to my doctor about?
I gone for walk yesterday with 4 people it was some what windy out side and only I had short of breath.
