Do you have a Tempur-Pedic mattress? Tell me about it!

We’ve had ours for 10 years now and it’s not changed one iota. Comfortable and no heat problems. We had a warranty issue with the platform: it started squeaking within a year of buying the bed. I just figured it was something we had to deal with. Fast forward seven years, and I’m talking to our local TemperPedic dealer. I mentioned the squeaking, and she says “Oh! That’s a known warranty issue with the old platforms. Just call them and they’ll send you a new one and take the old one away!” Sure as hell, that’s what happened, and nary a squeak since. The 20-year warranty is for real, apparently.

These mattresses come in different thicknesses and prices, so make sure you get one that suits you.

I’ve had this generic memory foam mattress since about 2007. It is amazing. I’ve had no problem with feeling too hot - even in Louisiana summers.

I hear ya! I don’t think it’s the mattress that causes or might prevent that, though.

Oh wait, you meant…

(I just can’t believe no one else jumped on that in over 20 posts)

About 5-10% of people say it is a problem.

By what metric are you judging? There is no objective “best” when it comes to mattresses. Tempur pedics are certainly fine mattresses, but that amount of money is simply not necessary. You’re paying for the warranty, the marketing, and the status symbol. *More money does not mean more comfortable. *

My mattress is a memory foam/spring combination, and I’d rate it as the most comfortable bed I’ve ever slept on in my life. And I’ve slept on a Tempur pedic. There’s nothing *wrong *with the Tempur pedic except the price tag. Is a warranty really worth that much cash, though?

Thanks. A great argument against a claim no one is making.

Once again. No one is making that claim.

It is to me and I can afford it. If you prefer a memory foam mattress, it’s worth the price if you have the means. Not to stealth brag but I’ve had more than a few guests share that mattress with me and many of them have raved about it without knowing what I paid for it. I’d like to think that I had something to do with their good night’s sleep but the mattress has often been specifically mentioned.

I got a generic memory foam mattress (Queen sized) through Woot.com for only $300 (free shipping.) I stank like hell for about 2 months, and that was awful. But my back felt so much better that I just opened the windows as much as possible.

It’s been almost six months now, and it’s still the most comfortable bed I’ve ever slept in. I did put a thickish mattress pad over it, due to the heat issue. It works like a charm.

Meant to add:

It’s ten inches thick, pure foam. It’s very soft. I doubt it will last ten years, but the relief to me has been astounding, and I couldn’t have made any more of an investment at the time.

Who knows though? There’s no sign of denting yet, and I ain’t small. . .

Does it still off-gas? :stuck_out_tongue: Iv’e always wondered about that, because there is just a certain type of rubber/plastic that off-gasses in a big way, and I always notice it, and I can’t stand it. I mean, I really, really hate it.

I went with the memory foam topper idea, too, and put it on top of my old mattress. Most of the benefits of a full memory-foam bed at a fraction of the price. The brand was Bragada, and I think I paid about $400 for it. No off-gassing or smell, and no heat issues.

Toppers are not all created equal. Some of them have a big stank on 'em. Also, there are different densities for memory foam. You’ll likely need to search for 5-pound foam in order to get away with a 2" or 3" topper.

Yeah, the smell issue can not be understated. It was awful for a while. But compared to the pain I was in before it just didn’t rate returning the thing. Plus, I could never afford a more expensive one - even that caused about six weeks hardship at the time.

I remember that mine had a bit of a smell for a couple of days.

I have probably had mine for ten years. It’s just as good as the day I bought it. Of course, I’m a lanky guy and there has never been a really big person on it.

My wife and I had the Tempur-Pedic bed topper and enjoyed it for a while, but then I discovered that my bad back was actually better off with a conventional mattress. I was waking up with progressively worse backaches with the topper, that I don’t get otherwise.

Perhaps that is all there was to rave about.

I do not have a Tempur-Pedic bed, but I have a shaped pillow of that kind of material. It is very comfy! I tend to go in phases with it though. Sometimes I use it; sometimes I have to pile pillows on top of it when I have sinus problems, for example.

I’ve slept on a Sleep-Number bed twice, staying overnight at my friend’s. Also very comfortable, but aren’t they even more expensive than Tempur-Pedic? Dunno.

Recently on the internet I heard that Tempur-Pedic beds do have a drawback; they may make, er, sexual relations a bit awkward for some people. I have no idea if that is true or not, so do not take my word for it. :stuck_out_tongue:

You specifically claimed that “you can’t get something comparable inexpensively.” How is this not stating that more expensive is better?

Anyway, I love sleeping on my inexpensive memory foam bed more than I liked sleeping on a Tempur pedic. My mom took a nap on my bed and liked it too, so much that she immediately went out and bought the same mattress for herself. We’re both decidedly non-lanky, so take this endorsement as you will.

A couple of comments:

  1. husband has no specific complaint but says he doesn’t notice a great improvement (believe me there is one.)
  2. we got a real thick one so our (>$100) sheet sets (the fitted one) don’t fit. I’ve been lazy, so make due by using 2 top sheets horizontally. at some point I’ll alter the fitted sheets so they will…but if you’ve got hundreds of $$ worth of sheets you might want to look into this.
  3. no heat problems or difference noted. we keep the bedroom pretty cool though.
  4. weirdly our cat loves it even more than she loved her last mattress…it’s the Tem purr pedic effect, you can’t scrape her off any chosen spot.

I’d say actually, that foam mattresses (memory and other foam), are probably actually the easiest mattresses to get inexpensively. For example, check out the selection at Overstock.com and amazon.com. Easier to get inexpensively because they can be compressed and folded or rolled into a shape that can be shipped via Fedex or UPS cheap, and stored and sorted easily in a warehouse. Instead of requiring freight or other more expensive service, and being a pain to sort and ship.
Edit to add - you just can’t be tied to the brand name “Tempurpedic”.

No. What I said was, “If you prefer memory foam, you can’t get something comparable, in my experience, inexpensively.” Nice job cutting out the relevant bit.
