I never even considered needing a survival plan until I saw this thread. Dammit, I live in a Buttcrack, USA and we have a base nearby. That means whatever the tedium doesn’t kill, the terrorists will. Is there room in that yoga class for one more?
Hey, sweetie . . . settle down. I’m in Indy too . . . um, we’re not exactly PTTT (Prime Terror Target Territory). What are the bad guys going to do in Naptown??? Destroy the pork tenderloin-making facilities? Bomb Circle Center Mall? Yeah, that would teach us infidels!
But just in case the big bad wolf comes, I’ve stocked my provisions – the super-size bag o’ Cheetos and a nice bottle of Glenfiddich. And extra dog food.
On top of everything, I’ve heard more than one so-called terror expert on the news calling the chances of a radiological, chemical or biological attack on US soil “remote”.
Just Uncle Sam covering its ass, and the media playing on your fears to get ratings.
Relax.
visqueen is a heavy plastic.
Yes, we do have a plan and a secondary plan. we still need to get more water and a better first aid kit, but otherwise, we’re pretty much prepared for whatever we can prepare for. if it’s something that’s going to mean kiss my ass goodbye, well, then i guess we are prepared for that too. lol
Nope. There are far better things to do than waste time and money preparing for such an unlikely event.
An unlikely event
I don’t understand. Do you live somewhere there are no earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornados, the power lines won’t go down, the water main won’t break, no chance you’d ever be out of work and need something to fall back on…
I don’t see where emergency planning is just for a terrorist attack.
Kathy
Be as confused as you want…there are many of us that don’t have the major threat of those things you described above.
Hell if the power lines go down I don’t think I have to worry. I still have my sterno, lighters, and family within walking distance.
Sorry but floods where I live is extremely unlikely, Hurricanes are completely unknown and has to be a complete freakish anomonly, tornados can happen but in my 34 years never a one has hit, and as far as our power lines…well we are a local electricity dependent group of people, meaning we are a city owned utility. Yes it goes against my policitical beliefs, it is not run by some comglomertate (sp) and therefore our prices tend to be less and frankly, if I had to be out with electricity, I would survive.
Yes, it would suck but I don’t think my life would become horrible without electricity. I would make do.
But overall, if our utilities where cut off, I think we all would fair fine. I don’t tkink a threat is to come to me and my neighborbors…if there is well so be it. We all will die at some point.
You are much more likely to die from traffic accidents and tobacco smoking than from a terrorist attack, yet how many people have a traffic accident survival plan?
BTW, if I had to, barring no water to flush, given certain people’s disaster plan…I would dig a large pit in the back yard.
You have to do what you have to do, what is the problem? You have no choice. You dig a pit or clog up your toilet for disgusting experiences? What in the world would you do?
I think I would dig the trench…if you think differently, you need a case in reality.
You’re missing the point here.
We’re not necessarily talking about a terrorist survival plan, although the recent events have brought this into the forefront.
We are talking about an emergency survival kit. As a survivor of three major earthquakes, I can vouch for the good sense involved.
A good guide for a survival kit.
And one item that a lot of people forget - communications. After the 1994 Northridge earthquake, communications in our area was out for 6 hours. I was the only communications in and out of our neighborhood with my amateur radio equipment.
While cadolphin is not a ham radio operator, we do have a radio communications plan that we set up tonight. Even CB radios or small FRS radios from Target are beter than nothing.
Remember, it’s too late to assemble an emergency kit after the emergency has happened. Whether you live in an area with your own private source of electricity or not, you WILL get hungry and thirsty. You might need first aid. And that’s what it’s all about - keeping yourself alive.
Exactly. I don’t collect months and weeks worth of food in case of a terrorist attack, I collect it in case of natural disaster, unemployment, or other unexpected event. It’s come in handy twice in the past year. Having a 72-hour emergency kit is just common sense, not time-wasting panic. (*Makes another note to self to update said kit)
You are correct - I was reading the OP as relating just to terrorist attacks and I think there is mass overreaction to that danger. I do live in an area that occasionally gets tornadoes. We have a basement with candles and some water down there.
Stinkum - Indy is the 12th largest city in the U.S. There may be hundreds of terrorist cells within the country. Don’t think we couldn’t be a target. Instead of hitting one or two major cities for mass casualties they could go for dozens of mid-major cities with bio/chem attacks instead, effectively tying up the whole country.
Witch - maybe duct tape and sealing windows wouldn’t help if you were at “ground-zero” for a chemical attack suck as a nerve gas, but it surely would if you were downwind several miles as the gas begins to disperse or get diluted. Same thing I would think with a biological agent like anthrax spores or something. Lessen the chances of breathing in a toxic agent.
Jinx - visqueen - http://www.asapstl.com/tek9.asp?pg=products&specific=jnqrroh8 I probably won’t mess with this, actually, but I could see taping my windows and doors closed for a couple days so agents could blow away. I mainly want to be sure I have several day’s worth of water on hand, food, meds, a radio and sleeping bags for warmth if the power is out, the water supply is contaminated or we cannot safely leave the house for several days.
BTW, here’s a radio I own and would recommend - it has a hand crank so you never need to worry about dead batteries plus it has a built in flashlight:

H8…I’m just going by what some doc said on ABC News last night. He said the case of a biological attack the plastic shheeting would be pretty much useless, your best bet would be to shut off any ventilation in your home and hie it to an inner room. In the case of exposure to a chemical attack, cut your clothes off and gently wash your head and eyes.
Heck, weren’t we earlier told (before this specific warning this week) it would take massive amounts of either agent to cause such a scenario? And that it would be extremely difficult to “release”? Especially as a terrorist action? Does anyone else remember this?
Perhaps we’re being dicked around a bit?
I’m not terribly worried here in Indy, but I do have a big bottle of vodka and 60 Ativan just in case.
Well, I am wearing a cinch-belt, high heels and dangly earrings, so I will leave a cute vaporization-shadow on the wall for future generations to enjoy.
“When in trouble, or in doubt, run in circles: scream and shout!”
Nawww. I’m just going about life as usual in my case. I’m from Midwestern stock, so I already have heavens knows how big a supply of food in the pantry, oil and kerosene lamps, kerosene stove, kerosene and lamp oil, candles, extra batteries, solar/hand crank powered radio, etc., etc., etc. (Hey, we might be snowed in here in the South! Really!)
And, I already pay attention to what’s going on around me, so what else can I do? Stand on my head and shout ‘woo-woo-woo’ in hopes of averting disaster?
<< Ya shure, ya betchya. >>
I don’t think an emergency plan is gonna do me a whole lot of good while I’m transferring subways in Grand Central Station every morning.
I’m just living life as usual.
Well, I have one of those window-hammer/seatbelt cutter things, a spare set of warm clothes, road flares, and a toolkit…
So, not to be too morbid here, but how long do we think it’ll be before somebody panics, rushes his family into the walk-in closet, duct-tapes all the drafts shut, and they suffocate themselves?
