Just curious. I don’t. I turned it off ages ago. In fact, when I register on a new message board, that’s one of the first things I turn off in the user CP.
I think the default is it being on, though.
I do (I think). But then I’m a nobody and getting a message is a (momentarily) exciting and infrequent event, so I’d hate to miss out! 
I turned it on many years ago after it took me several days to notice that I had received a PM.
After becoming a mod I also changed it to also send me an e-mail so that I’ll notice it even faster.
No - my “landing page” for the SDMB is the User Control Panel. PMs show up at the top of the subscribed threads list.

Didn’t even know that was an option. I just rely on the “private message” alert at the upper right hand corner.
I, also, never knew that was an option. I get an email whenever I have a PM, which is very rare.
I have the pop-up turned on, but I shut off the email notification when I turned civilian.
