Ignoring the sound of the gun and not having an explosive bullet, what would one listen when being shot? Would it be possible to hear the bullet hitting bones/body/organs?
In Black Hawk Down* (the book), one of the Rangers was hit in the forearm by a bullet. He said he heard an unmistakeable “CRACK” as it shattered his radius (or maybe it was his ulna).
*I know I read it, but I can’t be 100 percent certain it was in BHD.
From deer hunting, you can hear a “Plop”, or a wet “Thud”, when the bullet hits flesh. Even from 300 yards away. So I imagine the noise at the impact site was quite loud.
Of course, my perspective was a bit removed from that of the deer’s…
Much of what I shoot is suppressed and subsonic.
Still, even a .22 bullet impacting dirt, trees, phone books or whatever is very loud.
Any round hitting a target at 1,000 fps makes a pretty loud noise.
Maybe I’ll find a ham or loin and do some testing out back…
Yes, I was surprised how splatty a bullet hitting a mammal is!
The only thing I’ve been shot with is a BB gun. It hit me just behind the right ear, on that bony part of the skull. I definitely heard a loud “thwack” that resonated through my skull. Hurt like a motherfucker, drew a little blood, but no lasting damage.
From what I read on the Internet, I wouldn’t test it with a .308.
My brother shot me in the leg, but it was at very close range. The sound of the gunshot drowned out the sound of the bullet strike.
I thought you were about to say, “the sound of the gunshot drowned out the sound of my scream!”.
Wow, and I thought my brother and I didn’t get along
It was an accident due to his poor gun handling. He was a former Marine, and I teased him about this incident for the rest of his life. The last time we spoke, he called one afternoon. I was out in the yard and it was a minute or so to get to the phone to answer. As soon as I realized it was him, i said “Sorry to be so long, Jack. I had to limp to the phone.”
The shooter will hear the sound but the shootee, not so much because the sound usually arrives after impact but even so, the shootee’s mental awareness is preoccupied with pain, shock and/or death. Kinda hard to multitask at that moment.
You hear Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’”
