Do you know of Bob and Doug McKenzie?

Not a clue.

Never heard of them or Strange Brew.

Too old for me methinks

Yeah, the sweet spot would have been being aware of SCTV (SNL’s nerdy Canadian stepbrother) in 1980-1982. The movie came out in 1983, and by then, the characters may well have already been on the downside of their popularity.

No idea who they were.

I’m not a huge fan, but of course I know their body of work.

Years back we had friends visiting from Canada. I rented Strange Brew on videotape. They didn’t think it was funny, nor did they think Canadians behaved in any way like Bob and Doug.

Or 78, if it’s a metric case.

Your Canadian friends have no sense of humour then.

Obviously it’s a parody, and a pretty damned good one too!

I knew they were a Canadian comedy duo, thought they did novelty songs, and I knew Rick Moranis was one. That’s all I got.

Take off, eh.

A friend and I had just great memories of Strange Brew from when we were teenagers. A few years ago I dug out a copy and we re-watched. The movie was awful. My memory just kept the handful of funny moments and the other 80 something minutes were just bad. My friend hated it it even more than I did. Sometimes you can’t go home again I guess.

Didn’t they popularize “hoser” for a while?

Heard of them, knew Moranis was one of them, saw the Strange Brew title in my netflix rec’s at one point.

Pizza raid!

Probably the most difficult pop culture sensation for me to explain to people under 30.

“OK, so the distributor of this SNL-type show wanted a recurring 3-minute sketch of identifiably Canadian content. Moranis and Thomas were incredulous. ‘What do you want us to do? Sit in front of a Canadian map with tuques on and drink beer?’ That’s what they did, and it took off. They had a hit album, a hit single, a hit movie, t-shirts, Pizza Hut commercials, the whole thing, eh?”

Seriously, if you hadn’t lived through that, would you believe it?

And, yes, I loved those guys.

How they came to be.

They were in the news this past summer. But being old, I of course already knew who they were. Several of the SCTV cast appeared in a benefit concert in Toronto for Dave Thomas’s nephew who was paralyzed in a snowmobiling accident. Thomas and Moranis reprised their roles as the McKenzie brothers.

He’s moved into television dramas in recent years – Bones and The Blacklist most recently.

We’ll known story here in Canada, and exactly true.

We have mandated Canadian content rules, and thus were born Bob and Doug.

My phone always changes well to we’ll. Sorry, eh.

They also had a cameo in Disney’s Brother Bear as mooses.

I am a 45 year old Canadian. I will let you guess if I am familiar with the comedic hilarity that is Bob and Doug MacKenzie.
