Without looking, I’ll wager that it’s still the same WMAQ that it was 20 years ago. And WTTW at channel 11 is PBS, and WFLD is probably still Fox and still at channel 32, and WGN will probably be at 720 AM and channel 9 forever.
Television yes, KDKA (CBS), WPXI (NBC), WTAE (ABC), WPGH (Fox), WPCW (CW, natch) WQED (PBS), WQEX (Used to also be PBS, is now home shopping?!?!) and WPCB (Cornerstone Christian TV which also operates as a satellite network).
Radio, not so much. Some stations have been the same forever, KDKA, KQV, WAMO, WWSW, but the rest have changed so often between Clear Channel, Westinghouse/CBS and other radio hegemonies I only know frequencies, not call letters. And 99% of the time now, I listen to XM rather than anything local.
Tumbledown, you’re from Pittsburgh, no? I remember the TV call letters from growing up in Johnstown, where we could pick most of them up with a good roof antenna. Let’s see, KDKA is channel 2, WTAE is 4, WPXI (WIIC when I was growing up) is 11, WQED is 13 and WPGH is, or was, 53.
Here in Tucson, I know that TV station KVOA 4 is NBC, KUAT 6 is PBS, KGUN 9 is ABC, KMSB 11 is FOX, KOLD 13 (or translator 7 in some areas) is CBS, KTTU 18 is MyNetwork TV, and KWBA 58 (which is licensed to Sierra Vista) is The CW.
As for radio, there is only one to know, and that is KLPX 96.1. The only other two I listen to are that other classic rock station on 107 and BOB 97.
I’ve lived in LA all my life and can’t imagine NOT knowing the TV call letters:
Channel 2: KCBS
Channel 4: KNBC
Channel 5: KTLA
Channel 7: KABC
Channel 9: KCAL (formerly KHJ in my youth)
Channel 11: KTTV
Channel 13: KCOP. Although I’m not sure if they still use that.
I probably don’t know as many of the radio stations as I used to simply because I hardly listen to the radio any longer. But I know a lot of them.
Radio: KNBR680 KTCT1050 KMEL107.7 KYLD94.9
Just off the top of my head. I missed KBHK, which changed to KBCW in 2006. I’d know more radio if I ever listened to anything besides baseball. 680 and 1050 are the sprts channels and the two FMs are the ones I listened to in high school (though 94.9 was 107.1 for some of that).
How does Pittsburgh have both “W” and “K” call letters? I always learned “W” called out stations East of the Mississippi, and “K” was the west. Living in the Twin Cities, we have a mix.
ABC: WICS (2 on my cable)
NBC: WAND (10 on my cable)
CBS: WCIA (3 on my cable)
PBS: WILL (12 on my cable)
FOX: WRSP (7 on my cable)
CW: WBUI (6 on my cable)
The Springfield, IL Radio Market (as much of it as I know)
The local TV affiliates in Orlando(ish) are WOFL (Fox), WKMG (CBS), WESH (NBC), and WFTV (ABC.) The radio stations I listen to are usually AM talk radio stations, WDBO, WFLA, and WAMT.
