without reading the thread: She’s married to Jay Z.
I didn’t know just like that, but when I sneaked a peak I said “ooooh yeah”.
The reason I had seen it before was because I remember reading something about Jay-Z saying he wasn’t going to say the word “bitch” anymore, and I remember thinking it strange that he apparently wanted a pat on the back for eliminating one of the words he uses to degrade women in his lyrics. And then I think he took it back, or decided to just say it anyway, or something. (Yes, riveting stuff, a rapper might be 1% less misogynist, but then isn’t.)
And I remember thinking it was strange, because I rather thought Beyoncé sang about women in an empowering way (I may be wrong, I don’t really know).
No, not knowing they are married does not seem strange to me at all. Their personal relationships are even less interesting to me than their uninteresting music. I don’t know how else I would’ve come across such information. If it were written down somewhere I would not read it, if it were being broadcast on radio or television it would not be something I would listen to or watch.
You should research this more before playing any pub quizzes.
I didn’t even know Beyonce had a fiance.
I consider him a much bigger deal, but she is definitely more popular and much more well known.
His net worth is roughly $500 million and hers is roughly $300. Interestingly, Wikipedia says they have both won 17 Grammys. He has been nominated 51 times and she was nominated 45 times. It looks like she has received more awards overall, probably a reflection of the broader appeal of her music. She has actually sold many more albums worldwide than he has, 118 million to 50 million. If you count Destiny’s Child, add another 50 million to her total.
He is not retired. He still writes, performs, records, and produces along with all his other business ventures.
They aren’t married, at least not yet.
What, they’re not? In that case I didn’t know that, I just thought I did. C’mon, just knowing they were a couple at all is impressive when you consider that I have no idea who either of them are.
She is married to Jay Z, a famous rapper, although I know little enough about rap music that he’s basically just “the one who’s married to Beyonce” to me.
ETA: With regard to your other questions, I would consider this pretty common pop culture knowledge. I’d find it a bit surprising that someone who knew who Beyonce was in the first place would be unaware that she was married to Jay Z.
I know who Jay Z is, and I know who Beyonce is. Didn’t know they were married.
Not having any idea of who they are is the impressive thing to me.
The reason I know both these names is because I do crossword puzzles. Celebrity names come up with frequency. Other than that they are celebrities and I have a strong sense that they are African American (although I have never seen a picture of either one), I couldn’t tell you who they are, although I have learned from this thread that they do music things. You may guess that the fact they are married to each other doesn’t shift my world around much.
Eh, what can I say? I don’t normally revel in my ignorance, just not that into contemporary R&B.
More interesting than knowing or not knowing who they are is how defensive some people seem about not knowing who they are (or are married to).
Which one, Jay Z/Beyonce or Chris Brown/Rihanna? I knew the first one, I swear to God! I swear to God!!
Aha, so you do have some idea of who they are.
I’m not judging taste, it would just seem like an amazing feat of media-avoidance if those names didn’t ring any particular bells.
Yeah, don’t get me wrong - I know Chris Brown and Rihanna’s names and that they’re singers, but only because they’re constantly in the news for allegations of domestic violence, they get made fun of on The Soup, Seth McFarland ripped on them at the Oscars, etc. I just don’t know anything else about them and couldn’t name you any songs they sing.
Yes. I thought it was extremely common knowledge.
Also, I have tickets to see Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake perform at Soldier Field this Summer. I’m not usually much into shows like that but this one just seems like such a fun time.
Not a clue, offhand.
After looking at the answer, I have heard that. I am, however, much more familiar with Beyonce. I have heard of her husband but have only a vague idea of who he is. I don’t listen to rap or follow basketball.
Regarding the questions in the OP:
- I think many people know this (probably most younger people).
- I don’t think it is at all surprising to find someone who doesn’t know it.
I don’t even know or care who Beyonce is.
