I differentiate between rap and hip-hop.
Yes, but *how *do you differentiate? I mean, they really are the same thing, but when most people think they see a difference, they usually mean that they consider commercial rap as rap and underground rap as hip hop.
I have never heard anyone say that hip hop is the disco of rap. That is boggling my mind.
Also, hip hop is so big. Anyone who says that it is about “me me me” or whatever must really be limiting what they choose to listen to. Hip hop covers every topic you can think of.
I took it to mean that hip-hop is a somewhat more rhythmic and commercial version of rap, more suitable for clubs and dancing. I have no idea if it’s true, but it’s more or less what I think as well.
Keep in mind that I thought ‘Gangnam Style’ was some kind of clothing fashion, so I’m not exactly cutting-edge on pop culture items.
Vaguely remember that Jay-z puys out music I don’t particularly care for. Didn’t know about the Beyonce connection. 29yr old Dutchie.

You have to remember that I’m old and was around when rap first started becoming popular. ‘Old School’, if you will. I could come up with examples if I had the time (which I don’t – I just spent an infuriating hour on the phone with Comcast), but in any genre anyone can bring up counterexamples. The simplest way I can put it is that to me, rap is ‘angry’ and hip-hop is made for dancing to. Rap and hip-hop are sub-genres. Saying they’re the same is like saying The Beatles and Green Day are the same because they’re both rock.
In any case, I find hip-hop to be boring; so I didn’t know who Beyoncé is married to, and have no reason to care.

Yeah, I’m pretty old too, and I am pretty sure you and I can match up with our hip hop bona fides. And you are entitled to your opinion, of course. But as a dyed in the wool hip hop head, I have never heard hip hop/rap described the way you do.
Real hip hop has *always *been angry, funny, sexy, poetic, jazzy…and more. Again, I do know that many people at some point started to consider rap different from hip hop, but in every case I have ever come across, until this thread, it always seemed to me that they were calling ‘rap’ commercial and pop and hip hop the more underground stuff. So I just found your post strange. But yes, I know…mileage varies.

I know that Beyoncé is married to Jay-Z, but the fact that I know that is a little surprising even to me. I think it’s fairly general pop culture knowledge … but I’m usually not that great at pop culture. Oh, you know what? I live in NYC and I think that they’re even bigger around here because they’re a New York couple and are pretty visible here. Ok, so that’s probably why I know. If they lived somewhere else, I’d have no clue. I remember at least two times at work when some young whippersnapper coworker came in and was all excited that he/she saw Beyoncé and Jay-Z out at a club or a restaurant over the weekend.
I also know that at least at one point, the other two members of Destiny’s Child are Kelly and Michelle … because they are on Sesame Street and that’s what Elmo calls them.
I have absolutely no idea.

I didn’t know she was married until this week and I saw a headline on my news feed about a rumoured pregnancy. So now I know she is married to Jay-Z. I only knew who Jay-Z is from an Aziz Ansari standup bit.
The only reason I know they’re married is because of the press after their baby was born about the other parent suing the hospital because of some special treatment he claimed they received. And I don’t think that made the news outside of the NYC area.
You could see the half time show and soon thereafter forget the name of the performer.
For me, I know who Beyonce is, but don’t know her work at all and didnt know who she was married to (or who Jay Z is).
Even I know who Beyonce’s husband is: Jaye Z, or however it’s spelled.
(I know this mainly from MTV China. It and the BBC are the only two cable channels piped into our building for free. We’re too busy to waster time with paying for cable.)
