I had never regarded bread pudding as a type of custard - is the category more broad than I realized?

Forgot to actually respond to the OP: I love bread pudding.

Custard is what makes it bread pudding.
Chop, cube or tear up bread, soak in custard, bake.
Does not appeal to me in the slightest. My reaction might have been different if my mom had made it when I was a kid, but I never even heard of it till I was an adult. It does nothing for me.
I voted no because that’s generally true. There was one place where my ex-wife said I had to try it and I did like it there.
Love bread pudding, with custard sauce or even brandied hard sauce. I make it to use up bread that is getting stale. I like it with chopped toasted almonds, raisins and plenty of cinnamon.
I love it. Warm bread, with custard or caramel sauce. No chocolate though.
Love it. With rum raisins tucked in between the bread chunks, and crisp sugary crust on top.
I always enjoy bread pudding when it crosses my path, but I’ve never made it myself or sought it out. I’m not much of a dessert person.
I have to check out Bittman’s savory bread puddings, though. A savory custard is a heavenly thing. I do a dish of artichoke bottoms baked in egg and cream that is so French it sings the Marsellaise when you take it out of the oven.
Oh gods yes. I will eat ALL the bread pudding.
Unless it has chocolate in it, in which case I pass.
I’m a fan. I devised a pumpkin bread pudding a few years ago that was especially delicious.
I don’t really understand the second option in the poll. It doesn’t seem to belong there. It makes no sense.
ETA: Though I agree with Maggie about the chocolate. I will simply eat around raisins.
Yes, Yes, a thousand times Yes!
It’s fine, but pretty low on the dessert hierarchy. The sort of thing where I won’t make it, go out of my way to buy it, or generally choose it over something else on the menu, but if someone wanted to share some with me I’d enjoy it.
Love it if it doesn’t have raisins…ick.
If I was eating bread pudding without raisins, and someone asked me what I was eating, I’d answer, “It’s kinda like bread pudding, but without raisins”.
ETA: unless I was in a bitchy mood, then I’d answer, “mind your own fucking business, I’m trying to enjoy my . . .oh no you don’t.”
**kayaker **has the right of things.
Maybe it’s just me, but I would call “savory bread pudding” dressing or stuffing. And not pudding at all. Pudding is desert, and therefore sweet.
I didn’t have it until I was an adult and I loved it. Maybe you just haven’t had the right kind? I could see how it can be a soggy gross mess if it isn’t made right, but luckily I haven’t really had bad bread pudding before.
Yes. But for some reason, people started putting raisins in it. SWMBO is from New Orleans and she turns her nose up at “dead-fly” bread pudding.
It’s okay, but I wouldn’t seek it out.
