Do you like where you live?

I live in the city because I love living in the city. Are you living in the size of community you prefer?

ETA: My apologies for those who feel their option has been excluded. For “big city,” read “city,” and for “small town” read “town,” and see if that fits you better.

I live in a small township outside of a medium-sized town in central New Jersey. It’s not the community I prefer. I’m here because New Jersey is smack in the middle of the pharmaceutical corridor, which is my industry.

I’d rather be in Tokyo.

I love where I live, and wouldn’t change it for a million bucks. I really enjoy visiting the way-out country and really roughing-it camping, but don’t want to live the lifestyle. All the suburban and semi-rural crap in between can suck it.

I live in St Paul, which I dont consider a big city. I hate it here.

Shout out to Onomatopoeia!

I’m from a small township outside of a medium-sized town in central NJ, wouldn’t go back on a bet, and live in Tokyo because of my job in the medical device industry.

Tokyo ROCKS! I hope you can get back here sometime, Ono. In the meantime, you can consider me your doppelgänger over on the other side of the world.

I live in Seoul, which is great most of the time. I miss the culture of Chicago though.

I live in a medium sized city, and I love having a nightlife.

I don’t know if Ottawa counts as a big city or not. It’s my home. All my family and my stuff is here, so I love it. I only venture outside of it when compelled to by my relatives or my profession.

Thanks for making me miss it even more, KinkiNipponTourist. Color me the most outrageous shade of envy green.

Did you start out over here and get a transfer? I’ve been trying to figure out a way to get over there for a few years. I even contacted Otsuka Pharmaceuticals and Yamanuchi as they are former clients, believing I’d have somewhat of an in. No dice.

I live in a place which used to be a small town and is now part of suburbia, I reckon. Still, it’s a very comfortable place for me and I like it the best of anywhere I’ve lived. I am, however, looking forward to moving to the country later on.

I live in the suburbs and miss living in a nice sized city terribly. It’s the ability to walk outside your apartment and be within walking distance of so much culture, good food, and liveliness. Living in the suburbs has its positives, such as parking and a lower cost of living, but man is it boring.

I live in a center of a smallish town and I guess I love it here. Pretty cheap rent but everything essential is within walking distance: movie theater, shops, train station, beach. Would like to try living in a big city at some point, but can’t really handle the rent rates with my crappy salary.

I went for living in a small town and loving it.

Carson City is about 55,000 but we’re only 30 miles from Reno/Sparks which is around 300,000 so I guess it’s like having the best of both worlds.

I enjoy telling people that Carson has two working cattle ranches in the city limits. One of which is only 2-300 yards from our house.

Living in DC, and having a great time being young in the big city.

I thought the same thing until I realized that it wasn’t that much different outlay-wise if I dumped my car. Actually without a car and paying a little more rent, it’s still a little cheaper. That was 10 years ago and I haven’t looked back!

I’m homeless and staying with my parents until I can find a job. (Just finishing grad school, and shockingly, the world did not a beat a path to my doorstep with offers of work.)

I do not like it.

I live in a suburb of a big city, but in a great location: It’s walking distance to a communter train station, so I can take a train into downtown easily if I want to partake of the main city’s cultural attractions.

My work is located in another suburb, so my commute wouldn’t be any shorter if I actually lived in the city. It would be longer, in fact.

I think so, I haven’t been here long enough to say “love it” yet though. Sorry, none of the options seemed to fit just yet so I didn’t vote.

My preferred environment has always been in an inner ring suburb or interwar urban neighborhood.

I’ll soon be moving to a small, somewhat isolated (1.5 hour drive to the nearest major city, 2.5 hour drive back to my hometown) college town. I’ve always lived in larger metropolitan areas (1,000,000 to 3,000,000 residents), and I hope I can get used to small town life. The things I’m concerned about:

  • Finding my place where the demographics are close to 1:1 student to townie.
  • Boredom, or feeling like I’ve done everything that there is to do.
  • Meeting a member of the opposite sex that is around my age.

Things I’m looking forward to:

  • The quality of life and accouterments that come with living in a very liberal, progressive community; lots of smart and/or funky people, a vibrant downtown, huge arts scene, and so on.
  • Day trips exploring the countryside.
  • Finally being able to get on my bike and wander miles of rural roads with little traffic.

I picked “country and love it” because people on these boards have warped ideas of what a “small town” is - more than 25,000 might be a tiny city or a large town, but it sure as hell isn’t a small town. Anyway, I’ve lived in cities, but I prefer the lil less than 10,000 people towns I’ve lived in to them. It’s nice to live somewhere with a super low crime rate.
