Do you like your job?

I mean, do you like your God damned, mother fucking, cock sucking job? Because I don’t.

Oh, sure I’ve had tolerable jobs in the past that didn’t suck rhinosaurs testicles, and I’ve had jobs that were marginally interesting, so I didn’t puke every morning.

But right now I hate my job; isn’t there a saying about the number of times a solar illumination?

Fuck.

Tell me how much you just love rolling out of bed at 6:30 AM and slaving your life away for 10 hours. (Travel time included.)

My current job is OK. Better than some I’ve had, worse than others. I don’t get out of bed with a spring in my step. But I have kids and a mortgage and expensive taste in whiskey, so I guess I’ll keep going in.

I have no reason to complain. I’m highly paid. I have a “director” title without having to actually manage anyone. I’m reasonably well respected by my colleagues.

I hate all the organizational stuff. I hate reporting to someone, going to meetings, having performance reviews, dealing with HR, etc.

Mostly I just don’t like working. I work a lot because I’m afraid of financial insecurity. But really I’m quite lazy.

Rhinosaurs?

Yeah.

As suggested by Android, and accepted by moi.

How about elephant balls? That works.

I do like my job, and I think it’s largely because I don’t have to have it. I retired 6 years ago, but I got bored. After a series of temp jobs, I took my current position just in March, 2016. I do computer drafting and some 3-D modeling in the division of the company that designs and builds flight trainers for US and foreign military branches. I worked as an engineer for 26 years, and I didn’t want to do that any more. I like being a drafter. No meetings, no budgets, no crap. I go in, I create drawings or revise drawings, I’ve done a little design work, and I work 4 days a week. And for that, they give me a ridiculous amount of money and I’m loading up a 401K for when I decide to retire for reals.

So, yeah, I like my job.

That sounds pretty cool. I’d love to be able to play with a 3D printer. My workplace has one, but I think the engineers would dogpile me if I touched it.

I fucking LOVE my job! That’s why I’ve done it for the last 30 years. The spectre of retirement is looming…and I don’t wanna go!

Ask me to answer this question in a month, after I’ve met this year’s batch of students, and you might get a different answer!

You never know until you try. I suggest you start small, perhaps a medallion that says something pithy like “rhinosaurs testicles”.

My current job, teaching, is awesome.

The job I’d been doing previously had gotten tiresome long ago. So, while getting fired was humiliating, and six months of unemployment sucked, I got a happy ending.

I am a supervisor in a 9-1-1 center. Some days it is absolutely f—ing great! Some days can really get me down. Overall I really make a positive difference in people’s lives.

Calls can be tragic, or funny. Serious life-threatening one minute and full on NIMBY the next. Never know what the day will bring.

I’m not sure if I can say that I love my job. I really love what I do, though. It’s an exciting industry and I like working with my clients to solve their problems. I don’t want to do anything else.

I have trouble working with my boss, though. He’s incredibly obtuse at times and we’re all sorta working in an Emperor’s New Clothes environment here. That’s why we drink at the office.

Most of the time yes. Here lately not so much as i cannot get any time off due the business of the season and staffing changes. So burn out is what I have now.

Oh, yeah, a couple of you mentioned teaching. I teach part time at a university, and I really like that. I’ve thought about moving to teaching full time, but without a PhD, I don’t think I’d ever make enough as a university professor (and no way in hell am I going back to school and getting a PhD at my age). But I do really enjoy going in to teach. I helped one of my students get a good internship last semester! That felt great! And my students generally like my classes. Last fall I had 30 students for a night class (8:20-9:35 two nights a weeks), and I didn’t have a single drop. I felt really good about that!

In my day job, I’m pretty much just helping someone else make money and hoping I get a little of it. When I teach I feel like I’m actually helping a lot of young people.

Jeez. You people!
You were supposed to tell me how much you hated your jobs too.
Now I’m really depressed.

Next day:

"You missed this numbering sequence! This is important! You need to pick this stuff up!

Just shoot me now.

Sorry to hear it, Leaffan. Here’s a quote from Bridge on the River Kwai that probably won’t help, but it’s one of my favorite bits from the movie. Col. Green is interviewing men for the mission to destroy the bridge, and young Lt. Joyce comes in.

Wow. And Yup.

It’s good. My expenses are covered, with enough to spare to have a little fun with. My days are long, 10 hours on, about 12 hours door-to-door, but I only work 4 days a week with a day off in the middle (M-T, Th-F), and I’m just sitting at a desk working on my stuff. It’s quiet here, and everyone gets along, or at least ignores everyone else. I’ve got no one looking over my shoulder, ever, and as long my stuff gets done, no one even notices if I were to, say, disappear for a few hours in the middle of the day. I’m pretty sure I could just go home at lunch and no one would notice. It’s frequently quite boring, but “bored” beats the hell out of stocking shelves at Safeway, I can tell you that much.

Leaffan you are not the only one with a miserable job experience.

I’m not in love with the actual mechanics of my job but it’s the sort of job where I have trouble imaging anyone waking up and being excited to do it. It has its little perks and areas of interest but it’s mainly just a task I do to keep the money coming in.

On the other hand, I very much like my workplace and the people I work with. It’s a small office with a fairly casual attitude in many ways and the owner is a good guy. So, if I’m going to keep the wheels turning with unsexy desk labor, I may as well be doing it here.

I like my job, but I’m a substitute teacher, so my schedule is flexible. If I can’t work on a given day, I just don’t and I don’t need to call out to anyone. The downside, of course, is sometimes there isn’t work. I only sub for one district and I’m usually kept busy enough. The other nice things are, about 85% of my work is usually in one building so over the years I’ve gotten to know many of the kids and I get along well with the teachers on staff. It’s also nice because the district uses the same reading and math program throughout the district so I can pretty much walk into any building and know how the material is laid out. The downside of course is that the pay is horrible and there are no benefits. I love the flexibility though.
