Do You Like Your Name??

today as i was getting ready for work i took a minute to look at my nametag. when those big bold meganletters hit my eye i thought, gee… i really like my name, in fact, i like it so much that if it weren’t my own and i’d like to slap it on a daughter!

so anyway, now i wonder:

how do the teeming millions feel about their names? have you ever wanted to change it to something simpler or maybe more exotic, or are you happy with what it is?

I hate my real name. Brenda-Lee. What kind of name is that? Add to that my being hispanic and you’ve got a stupid name. I suppose it could’ve been worse. My dad’s other favorite singer was Loretta Lynn. That gives me the chills just thinking about it. Ick!

Work is fine for killin’ time, but it’s a shaky way to make a living.

I love my name. Michelle. It’s so pretty and feminine without being slutty or dull. And it’s right there in between too rare and too popular.

Cessandra

I would’ve gotten away with it, too, if it weren’t for those meddling kids!

I like it, it’s a pretty name and all, but the connotations leave a few things to be desired. My parents are both agnostic, so what posessed them to give me the name they did is beyond me. Maybe they intended it as a joke due to my last name. (No, I’m not going to tell you what it is, suffice to say, it continues the religious theme.) Plus, it seems like such a popular cheerleader prom-queen name, which fits me about as well as the average swimsuit, i.e. not at all. But it is a pretty name, and I’m thankful for that, at least.

Heck is where you go when you don’t believe in Gosh.

Brenda…my exfather in laws name was Guillermo Fernando SCHAEFER!!! And he was born in Hamburg Germany…there’s no accounting for parents.
As for me I’m a Debbi, born in the late 50’s.
There were 3 or 4 in every class I ever had.
So something a little more unique would have been nice. The other choice at the time…Wendy. Maybe Debbi is ok!

My first name is ‘Judy’ and I never thought about it, until I noticed how my husband NOW says it, ‘Jooody’ makes my skin crawl!!

But, mebbee he’s doing it to * make * my skin crawl! I just hate that he’s being successful at this!

Joooody

Hey there, dragonlady!! My favoritest sister’s name is ‘Debbie’!!

I remember Darlene was a favorite when I was a kid, a number of Janets, and Janices too. I like anything people can’t mess up too badly!

I was named after my grandfather, Patrick. I’m female, so my name is Patricia. It’s OK, but I also have an uncle and a cousin named Patrick.

I wish my parents would of come up with something more original.

If I would of been born five days earlier my name would of been Christine. My cousin got that one.

Bo

Well, my name is Santiago. So that’s pretty damn exotic already. If I changed my name I think I would go for something uncommon, but less flashy.
Like Krisden, or Holden or something like that.

Not only that, but my last name is McDonald, so I have a very weird name combo, Santiago McDonald.
I even had one lady at a bank say “No, really.” when I told her my name.
I left.

I like my name, its pretty sweet, and hell, I’ve gotten used to it over the years

I like my name well enough, but it is a fairly common first name and I have a very common last name. All my life I’ve been confused with other people with the same name. There are about 20 people in the Boeing company (admittedly a large firm) with the same first and last name as me, 3 or 4 with the same middle initial.

Other than that, the only time I was uncomfortable with my given name was in a college creative writing class where we were discussing D. H. Lawrence’s story, “The Rocking Horse Winner”. (Incidentally the best short story ever written, IMHO.) The boy in the story has the same name as me and the teacher was trying to convince us he had a wimpy name because he was a wimpy kid. Of course he was wrong about both the name and the kid.

“I’ll tell him but I don’t think he’ll be very keen. He’s already got one, you see!”

I’m not very fond of my name. I almost started using my middle name in college (practically everyone in my family, incidentally, goes by their middle name), but I met three guys my first quarter with that name and they were all assholes. So I stuck with my Gary Larson-nutcase-make-fun-of-name.
I do like my last name, though. It’s Irish, but not very common, at least not here in New Mexico.

Damn. I’m here at work trying to concentrate on clients and forget to post important parts.

Yours,

Carl

I do like my name… Anastasia. It’s memorable but not wierd, but I hate it when every second person at work comments on my name tag ("Hey! Isn’t there some Russian princess or something… blah, blah - I’ve heard it a thousand times).

It seems like a lot of my family members (sister, brother, cousins) also have uncommon, if not downright strange names. (Natalie, Gabriel, Sebastien, Karma, Akron, Raven, Piper, Shaman)

The key is to have an open mind, without it being so open that your brain falls out.

Hmmmm. Interesting thread, mega. I grew up in a time where when the teacher would call roll and she’d get to Karen, about 4 or 5 of us would say ‘which one?’
Being the strange individual I am, I hated it.

Now as an adult, it’s not so bad, but I had to change the spelling, gotta be at least a little different!!

I spell it, depending on my mood either:
Karyn or
Karynn

Just don’t call me by my middle name. I’ve commited severe bodily harm upon people for less. No, I ain’t tellin. If VB, pipefitter, or worse, Mr Bear tell you…

well, it won’t be pretty, trust me!

That’s my name, not a description. I am neither purple nor a bear. Okay, so I’m purple.<a true Wally original!>

I think that Matt is a fitting name for me, but I don’t know why. It just seems odd to think of myself with any other name. The only thing that gets to me is when I had class and about three other people have the same name.

I’m Paul. It’s kind of common, but even so I haven’t actually met that many others with it. I’ve known more Davids, Tonys, Marks, and Johns than Pauls.

However my middle and last names are fairly unique, and that makes up for it. Even if I do have to spell them out all the time.

thats my first name

I don’t really mind it

Nothing bad about my first name, very common. Last name, unless you are in Canada, isn’t too common. LaJoie(translated means the happy one). I like it, but my oldest daughter can hardly wait to change it(she hates it), no accounting for tastes.
The thing I don’t like about it is when peolpe say it the wrong way, it is pronounced the american way(Lajoy), but people still hack it up. If I had people pronounce it the French way, they would really hack it(the only one that ever got it right was my French teacher). I myself like the French pronounciation.

I think Chris is a good first name. Suits me well.

I just wish I had all of those hours back I have spent spelling my last name for people.
