I do… at least a little bit. What I mean is- having grown up in the 80s and 90s, I still sort of feel like I’m an 80s and 90s guy- a lot of the movies, tv, music, and books I like a lot are from the 80s and 90s. I sort of feel like I approach a lot of things with an 80s and 90s mindset. Closing in on 2012- it really seems like 2012 is “the future”, if merely the near-future. I imagine 2030 will really feel like the future to me.
What’s it like for those of you who grew up in the 60s and 70s- does it “feel like the future” to you?
Some things, like the ubiquitousness of computers, cell phones, and tiny digital cameras certainly does feel like “the future” to me. Medical imaging tech is out of Star Trek. Seeing disasters unfold in real-time on my TV.
Other things haven’t really changed that much. Given that I’m now working in a trade where machinery commonly dates back to the 1940’s, or even the 19th Century, I’m also simultaneously living in the past.
Yep. I remember reading in an SF novel decades ago about somebody taking a small box out of a cabinet and putting it into some device and a few minutes later taking out a fully-cooked dinner.
Medical procedures that are routine now would have been magical in the '50s.
I try not to. I use the internet, but I still don’t use cell phones, let alone smart phones. I still buy all of my music on CD or vinyl. The TV in my living room is about 20 years old.
Just the fact that I’m surfing the web (futuristic by itself) on my phone makes it futury to me. I still drive a car to work, but teleportation and personal flying craft don’t seem realistic.
Most of our powered equipment/tools date back to 1940-1950. The industrial sewing machine I use most often is a treadle-powered Adler built in the late 1800’s.
