Do you prefer the drapes open or closed at night?

I’m not opposed to having the blinds down at night, but I find it to be a lot of work to open them all up again in the morning and sunlight is absolutely necessary. I’m baffled that some of ya’ll are living in caves. Different strokes, I suppose. I don’t have much trouble sleeping at night, but I am much happier about waking up in the morning if there’s some natural light in the room. I also really enjoy sleeping with the windows open - nothing better for a good night’s sleep than a nice breeze and the sounds of birds and bugs and the occasional train. However, I would happily shoot out the neighbor’s security light if I thought I could get away with it.

For those of you who like to keep everything sealed up, do you run the furnace/AC year round?

We close the blinds at night, not so much because someone might see into our house, but because otherwise the windows are so dark and black. I’d rather see some color there instead of black.

I like my place a lot hotter than most people. My current place stays around 70 all the time with no climate control. My previous apartment didn’t. I’d open the windows when it got above 80 (no ac) and run the heater when it got below 60. So no, not all the time.

We never close any blinds/drapes/curtains. We live in the middle of nowhere with no neighbors in view. I can (and have) walk stark naked out the front door and around the house then back in through the front door.

We live on a large lot set back a good ways from the road and our neighbors. I close the blinds to block out excessive sunlight - especially sunset in the living room, and I’ll draw the curtains on the bedroom window facing the neighbor’s house if they have their outside lights on when I’m ready for bed. In the winter, I’ll close them for extra warmth, but most of the rest of the time, they’re open. I hate feeling like I live in a cave.

Small house, we have windows on the front and back door, and 8 windows otherwise [1 bathroom, 1 kitchen, 2 on the long wall that comprises living room and purported dining area, 2 in each bedroom.] We also however have these huge wonderful skylights. I don’t live in a cave … we heat with oil fired hot water baseboard heaters and wood stove in the winter, and refrigerate with a window AC in my bedroom which is also our computer area and a large through the wall AC in the rest of the house. I am happy if I can see my breath and hang beef in the bedroom  but the rest of the house is less of a meat locker. [I am losing weight and starting to have hot flashes as the fat cells release the stored estrogen or whatever the mechanism is. I love losing the weight but absolutely detest hot flashes. I thought they were all gone :(]

My condo is situated at the intersection of two sidewalks that are in frequent use by residents; I keep my blinds closed and the draperies drawn pretty much all the time. Other residents sometimes chide me for this.

I’m with you, largely because I’m naked much of the time. I guarantee no one wants to see that.

We live on the 3rd floor (2nd European floor) in a city. We have lace sheer curtains inside the windows in the front facing the street, nothing on the windows in the back which open into the backyard. We want as much light as we can get during the day. We also have rolling shutters on the outside of the windows in front which we close when we go to bed to block out the street light. No blinds, no drapes.

Don’t you watch movies? They don’t come in cars; they sneak up in the dark and watch you from your yard.

All this assumes the drapes match the carpet, of course. Or the linoleum as the case may be.

Mine are always open, but then again there is never anyone around outside our house other than the occasional car driving by at ~50MPH. Only one neighbor in sight and they are ~500 feet away.

The blinds get closed during the day in the summer, to keep the heat down.
They get closed in the evening, if the sun is shining on the TV and there is something on that we want to watch.
Otherwise, the blinds are open, even the big window in the living room, that looks out at the street and the sidewalk. If someone wants to watch me watching TV, then they are desperate, and I’m glad I can help.

I draw my blinds in the day. Living in the AZ desert, it keeps the house cool

Always surprised when I’m walking the dog after dark and I see people with thier windows uncovered and the lights on inside.

I hate the idea of being observed from the sidewalk when I can’t see out, to see who’s out there.

I close the blinds when it gets dark mostly because I don’t like seeing the “black hole” that the window becomes.

Closed. Light is an enemy of sleep.

I don’t have to worry about anyone looking in - unless you consider blue jays as “anyone” and they will shriek for food if they see you - but I rarely open them anyway. I just don’t think of it.

Do you prefer the drapes open or closed at night?

Mine, closed. Other people’s, open.

Seriously, I can’t understand why anyone would leave them open at night, unless they live in a walled compound. It actually takes me out of a movie when people cavort around in front of open drapes at night.

Closed. It’s much easier to sleep in a darkened room.

But, it is easier to wake up to a slowly brightening room.
