If you don’t have time to read and comprehend the OP and the thread, then you don’t have time to post.
If you’re too distracted to post coherently, then don’t post.
If you find yourself making inappropriate or stupid posts, then wait to post until you’ve thought things through.
<looks at join date, post count, and posts-per-day>
28+ posts per day? What the heck? I haven’t even noticed you.
<does a “all posts by” search>
Okay, mostly fast-moving game threads. That makes a little more sense. But still, that is an astonishingly high post-per-day count.
Please take a little friendly advice from an old-timer: You don’t need to post in every thread you open. If your post isn’t relevant or thoughtful, you’re not contributing to the community. You’re taking away from it. You claim to “love” this board, but you don’t respect the board or its posters if you’re not even bothering to read the OPs, let alone the threads. So make sure you only post in threads that you’ve read and that you understand, and make sure your comment is relevant and adds to the discussion in some way. If you do this, you will not only stop having to berate yourself for stupid posts, but you will become a valued member of the community.
Yes, I’m mostly active in the gaming threads, where there’s a nice camaraderie among the posters. I read many posts daily in five forums, but other than Games I have only responded to a few. Most of the time those have been serious, thought-out responses unless I’m playing off someone’s humorous post.
I don’t have a problem being dressed down for my mistakes, but it’s news to me that there is an acceptable number of posts per day…and that I have somehow exceeded it? It’s not like I’m blathering away in every new thread, day after day…or you would have recognized my user name.
Other than that, I agree with what you and everyone is saying about reading the OP and the comments before posting. I admit I’ve been too hasty in posting a couple of times. I am sorry and I intend to mend my ways. It was kind of you to take the time to give me good advice.
“Almost always read” for variable levels of both “almost always” and “read.”
If the op asks a straightforward enough question and the actual op is very long winded I might be opening up the thread with a response in mind and end up skimming rather than really completely reading the op. If there are many responses I will minimally skim them all but not completely read all of them, again, especially the ones that are very long and seem meandering or boring. There are certain posters whose posts I will not ever merely skim over because they among the posters who I know usually have something cogent (or entertaining anyway) to say.
In short, nope, not perfect.
That said, I am still also among the annoyed by the number of people who apparently can’t be arsed to actually read the op or even skim the discussion they are joining before blurting out something that shows they have not bothered.
And somehow I doubt that CheshireKat is among the worst offenders. Those who are aware that they sometimes do that seem to me to be less likely the worse offenders than those who believe they never have. IMHO.
I always read the OP and usually read the replies. Though I’ll admit, after reading the first 15 or so replies in this thread, I just scrolled down to get to the reply window. I figured there wasn’t any reply anyone else could make that would effect my answer.
