Do you still have an old fashioned Drugstore with Lunch Counter in your Town?

No soda fountains there any more to my knowledge. And I ride my bike out there sometimes myself. (There’s a bike route that runs from Atlanta out to Stone Mountain.)

There was one in downtown Pittsburgh in the mid-Seventies when I was having my braces worked on by a orthodontist nearby. Haven’t seen one anywhere since then.

Lunch counters always remind me of the sit-ins during the Civil Rights Movement:

No, my home town in NJ had one of these for many years. The pharmacy got bought by a big chain, which promptly built another on the state highway and closed the one in town. The store was empty for a couple of years, but just re-opened as a Dunkin Donuts.

(That still amazes me. Aside from our banks and convenience stores, it’s the only representative of a large-region chain in town.)

You know, when you step back and look at it objectively a drug store seems like a really odd place to have a lunch counter. (And yeah, I realize it started with the birth of sodas as medicinal concoctions. Still. Seems odd.)

And it also seems like a really good way for the flu to spread. “Hey, let’s march all these sick, sniffling, sneezing people right past the spot where the community gathers for lunch! That seems like a great idea!”

You wrote: “There’s a really old K-Mart here that has, waaay in the back, some kind of eating area.” You added: “It’s the only K-Mart left that still has a place to sit and eat.” On the off-chance that you actually believed the ‘really old K-Mart with some kind of eating area waaay in the back’ truly was the only K-Mart left that in fact still has a place to sit and eat, I wanted to relay that, er, no, the local K-Mart likewise has an eating area – right over by the soda fountain, same wall as the pharmacy.

I didn’t think you were being literal, but I wasn’t 100% sure.

Anybody know if Creech Drug store is still open in Harlan, KY? I haven’t been there since the early 90’s.
