Do you still have your high school class ring?

I would, only I gave it to my ex-husband while we were dating and he lost it.

As an aside, I happen to be class-ring-shopping right now. My daughter is president of the Spanish Honor Society and we can’t find any rings that represent languages. We’ve found one with Spanish dancers and another with mariachi band instruments…are there a lot of schools out there offering mariachi band instruction?

Yes and it’s too ugly at this point in time to wear. I have no use for it. It’s not gold or silver so it’s worth nothing.

No. Left it in the showers at MCAS Iwakuni (Japan) less than five years after graduation. Never saw it again. High school class rings are pointless.

Never wanted one, never got one, can’t understand why anyone buys the things. Same for college.

(No offense intended).

I never got a class ring. I noticed that all my friends and people I knew who had one wore it right after they got it and through senior year of high school then stopped wearing them. I knew no one in college who wore their high school ring. So I decided that it was kind of a waste for me and skipped it. It worked out okay because I ended up graduating early and getting married having a baby immediately (like the month I graduated high school) and had other things to worry about.

When my boys were in high school, they brought home the brochures for class rings and I told each of them that I would pay for half if they wanted a ring or I would give them whatever half would be and they could spend it however they saw fit. One ended up with a new video game system, the other a new computer and neither bought a ring. My niece (who is essentially my daughter) is buying a class ring this year, but she is only a sophomore so I expect her to wear it until she graduates then it will go into a jewelry box someplace like my parents’ class rings did and my husband’s class ring did.

My youngest (step) daughter is already planning and designing her class ring even though she is only in 8th grade. It will be interesting to see if she wants the same design when she is ready to purchase it. She wore her mother’s class ring for about a week once when she found it mixed in with some of her grandmother’s things. It turned out that her mother as a high school student had much smaller fingers than my daughter does now and we ended up having to take her to the EMS substation to have the ring cut off her finger. (It was cutting off her circulation and the sub-station was closer and quicker than an ER and my husband is an EMS supervisor so knew the guys working that day…mostly you can’t walk into a sub-station and get treatment.) I thought that might taint her attitude toward class rings in general but no, she still adores them and can’t wait to get her own. I suspect she will wear hers longer than any one else I have known.

No such thing here.

It’s somewhere in the house. I think I wore it for the my senior year of HS and then put it in a drawer.

I never got a high school ring. I did get one for university, but I stopped wearing it about 5 years after graduation. It’s pretty, as far as “class rings” go, but I guess I got tired of it.

Yes. Almost never wear it – only to reunions and that sort of thing.

Yeah, somewhere. My husband has his, too.

I don’t wear it, even if I wanted to, it’s way too big now, I was much fatter in high school.

Ditto. I have nothing against jewelry, or chachki’s in favor of your alma mater, but can anyone show me a gaudier piece of ornamentation than most of these class rings seem to be? Outside of Superbowl rings, I think you’d have to go to Jane Seymour’s Double Tea-Bag Necklace.

I am actually more likely to wear a JSDTBN, on the grounds that I might end up with the one that got within six inches of her boobies when they filmed the commercials and promotional materials.

Yes. On the spring day when they were distributed, I remember feeling sad because I wasn’t getting one. Then the teacher handed me the box and I remembered that I’d gotten one after all! I’d totally forgotten! I wore it for a while and put it away for years. Then those cash-for-gold ads started coming out where they said “Is your class ring gathering dust in a drawer?” I thought, “Yes, it is!” So I got it out and wore it for a while again.

What I really would like is to find my father’s college ring. Now that was a big chunk of gold. He took it off while raking the yard one day because it was giving him a blister from the rake. He meant to put it in his pocket, but apparently he dropped it, because he never saw it again. That was about 35 years ago. I keep looking for it and thinking of renting a metal detector. I could put my class ring clean through it.

Agreed. Never had one, for high school or college, never wanted one.

But dude, it’s spelled “tchotchkes”.

I’d never wear it again because, frankly, it goes too well with what I wore to the effin’ prom.

No. By the time I got to college, I had grown a little tired of wearing it. I left it in a drawer at my parents’ house. It got taken in the burglary.

None taken. Same here.

I still have it - I ran across it just the other day when rummaging through my jewelry box. But I haven’t worn it since my senior year of high school.

Yes, in my jewelry box next to my husbands’ ring. Silly me had it sized for my left ring finger, because I was going to be an old maid and never get married. Now I can’t wear it at all, because I wear my wedding band there.

I got one because it was very special: I was the first person in my family to graduate high school.

My mom made a neat little display with hers, my dad’s, my brother, and mine. I haven’t worn it in 20 years.
